Modern film and literature that exists in the microcosm of mainstream success constantly emphasizes narrative tropes and familiar structures that make most pieces of work feel easily digestible and consequently easily forgettable. This recycling of ideas while not inherently malevolent leads to a cycle of remakes, reboots, sequels, prequels, and marketable flops that constantly waters down the cultural content of the twenty-first century. Great artists still do exist, great art is still being created every day however the subtext of pretension, and the mass overflow of corporate-based media instills a sense of few memorable pieces of film, and literature. The value of narrative does not lie in the perception of easily defined or followed plot it lies in the intention of creating a piece of art or media that embodies some aspect of the human condition or allows an ideal or idea to be expressed in a way that can be deconstructed by an audience. Incidentally, pomp intellectualism has overtaken art and forced out the masses by disallowing real discussion on a less lofty level. The abstract can be allowed to be simplified or be made more concrete. Art exists first and foremost as a medium for the people to communicate the way they perceive the world around them.
Narrative has overcome every aspect of the structure in traditional media to hold a lonely place judging objective quality in art. Without an engaging story line media today cannot be judged as great, or worthy of praise. Plot has become the point of narrative instead of narrative being used argue an idea, or to portray a feeling. Narrative and plot are not inherently coupled, forever linked to one way of going about creating something to be perceived by an audience. To change the narrative, or attempt to change the way a narrative is perceived by changing perspective or by reordering the chronological structure of events in the narrative you force a new plot to emerge or a new narrative to take hold. In this way you create a new plot for your audience by way of alteration of simple structure. Due to the large impact that the structure can have on narrative you can see that structure as a form of storytelling supersedes narrative as the only plot device.
The simplification of artistic expression begets the cultural decline of society. The devaluing of structure in favor of narrative plot contributes to this oversimplification of the artistic medium. This destruction of high concept art by halting exploration of the human condition creates a cycle of poor representations of the culture of today leading to art that parodies the present without ever meaning to. Cultural renaissance comes from artistic experimentation, not creative stagnation
