I have tattoos, and I get reallllly tired of having people without tattoos ask me all kinds of questions and think I'm crazy just because I decided I wanted something permanently on my body. It's my body and I will continue to do what I want with it. So here's a list of things all those people that belong to team tatted would appreciate if all you non-tattooed people stopped saying to us:
1. "What happens when you get all old and wrinkly?!"
Well I guess when that day comes, maybe my tattoos will be old and wrinkly too, but that doesn't change the fact that they are there and they are important to me.
2. "You know that tattoos are permanent, right? I would never do something like that."
Okay, obviously I know tattoos are permanent, and obviously I feel strongly about this if I decided to have it drawn on my body and then have ink injected into my skin via painful needle. And just because you're afraid of commitment doesn't mean I am.
3. "Well what does it mean?"
I appreciate it if you're genuinely interested, but if you're going to use this question in a derogatory way, don't even bother. A very wise bunny once said, "If you don't have anythin' nice to say, don't say nothin' at all."
4. "You'll never get a job with those!" or "What is that going to look like in your wedding dress?!"
Yes, I will. Because I still have (some) faith in humanity, and that what matters is what's on the inside. Also, personally, all my tattoos are not visible in normal people clothing, so I'd basically have to be in a swimsuit or purposefully showing someone them; Therefore my potential employers will not see my tattoos and automatically decide I will not be offered a job. And if I cared if my tattoo showed with a wedding dress, I wouldn't have gotten it... sooo...
5. "Did it hurt?!"
Well do you think that getting a needle repeatedly shoved into your skin hurt? Yes. Yes it did hurt. Although I personally believe that the pain associated with tattoos is a little exaggerated, it's different for everyone, and it's bound to hurt some... DUH.
6. "What do your parents think of that?"
For your information, I am an adult and I can make my own decisions. My tattoos are on my body, not my parents' bodies, so does that really matter? But if you really wanted to know the actual answer to that question, try asking in a way that isn't degrading.
7. "Were you drunk when you got that?!" or "OH did you get it at senior week?"
No I was not drunk, and no I did not get it at senior week. I have never actually met someone who was stupid enough to get a tattoo while under the influence. Lots of tattoo parlors, believe it or not, have rules about that kind of thing FYI. Most people with tattoos are careful about where they go to get them and always make sure the parlor is clean if they end up going to a new artist.
8. "Oh so do you only befriend/date people that have tattoos too?"
I'm talking to you, aren't I? But to give a more straightforward answer, no. I don't care what other people do with their skin, and other people shouldn't care what I do with mine.
9. "You have tattoos, you must be tough."
Actually no, not everyone fits into a stereotype. Just because I have tattoos doesn't mean I don't have emotions. My tattoos are contrary to that-- they're some of the most important, emotional things to me. Also, my having tattoos doesn't make me a bad person, and I'm just as capable as non-tatted people with respect to responsibilities, emotions, parenting, and whatever else society can come up with.
10. Tattoos = drugs, alcohol, other illegal things, etc.
I only have two words in response to that: just no. STOP THE STEREOTYPES PEOPLE.
11. "Can I touch it?"
But like... why? It feels just like any other skin... And I don't like to be touched in the first place, so uh no.
