Things People With Food Allergies Are Tired Of Hearing

It's no secret that many people suffer from food allergies across the globe. From severe allergies to things like nuts and shellfish to intolerances such as gluten and dairy, many people have to be careful about what they do or don't eat. Chances are you know someone with a food allergy (or you yourself have one), and without a doubt, the same questions get asked over and over again. Whether it be a full fledged allergy or just an intolerance, here are things people with food allergies are tired of hearing.

"So, if you eat (insert food here), will you die?"

Although I understand your curiosity, no person with a food allergy likes to hear this question. While it depends on the severity of a person's allergy, it's not exactly something a person likes to think about. Bottom line is just know we shouldn't eat it.

"You can't eat that? How do you live without it?"

Well, you see, that's exactly how I live. And no, I don't want to hear about how bad you feel for me because I can't eat Nutella, peanut butter, gluten, etc.

"Don't worry, if you have a reaction, I can stab you with your Epi-pen."

Thanks, I think? As reassuring as that is, I'd prefer if you wouldn't tell me that you're ready at any given moment to stab me in the leg.

"I'm sorry, but there's no guarantee that our food is safe for you."

Ah, the statement that is heard far too often. Whether it's restaurants, bakeries, street vendors or caterers, few people can guarantee that you won't have an allergic reaction.

"Why can't you eat this? There's not even (insert food here) in it!"

While that may be true, cross-contamination is real. Far too real.

"Did you pack your Epi-pen? Your Benadryl? Make sure to read all of the labels!"

Yes, yes and yes, Mom / Dad. Of course they're only trying to help, but my eyes practically burn from all of the labels I read on the daily. If your allergy is severe, then it's likely you have an Epi-pen and Benadryl in every single bag you carry. Better safe than sorry, but trust me, I've got the routine down.

"Why don't you just eat a ton of it and build up a tolerance?"

Nope, doesn't work that way.

Even though I'm poking fun at a lot of the questions we're asked, it's a good thing to want to know more about food allergies and intolerance levels. If you don't have one, then you're lucky you don't have to think twice about your food and who prepared it. It's important to stay informed and be aware of who you know that may have any dietary restrictions! Believe me, I've never been more thankful to the people who have made sure to get the nut-free birthday cake.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
