As years go by, I see more and more how nothing stays the same, especially when it comes to people. Some new people have been added to my life, some have stayed from previous years and unfortunately some have left. I know I'm not the only one who has experienced this or has thought about how quickly things can change.
What causes our friend groups to change? Is it that you no longer have things in common? Is it meeting new people that you bond with more closely? Maybe it's that you have grown up or discovered, over time, what kind of person someone actually is. After all, a person's true colors never come out right away. Or perhaps it's simply life that causes people to drift apart. We get wrapped up in our everyday lives and sometimes forget to reach out. I personally think it's all of the above.
I know I have lost some friends from high school and have even became more distant with certain people in college. The same goes for relationships. The person you dated for a year, or even five years, can suddenly disappear. To some, it is sad when such an important person leaves our lives. This I agree with, but I also disagree. Sometimes specific people are meant to be a part of our lives to teach us and to help us grow as people.
I have found that it doesn't work well in life to be possessive; things are meant to come and go. People are no different. There are as many paths in life as there are individuals. All we can do is make the most out the experiences and how people effect our lives. We cannot forget to make an effort and be a positive impact on the lives of others as well. It may take months or even years, but the experiences you may have had with somebody who's no longer in your life will show their full benefit in time. It may be a bad experience or a phenomenal one, but either way, it's something that expands your horizons and helps you mature.
The experiences we have in life are more what we make of them compared to what happened to us. There's no reason to dread when it's time to let go of people that can no longer be in the same position in your life as they once were. Just enjoy the ride.
