It seems as though this year's presidential election has been one of the most ruthless events in American history. Both candidates are running a cut-throat campaign that has left our nation divided as it has ever been in our lifetime. Emotions are running high. People are scared. People are stressed. But, most of all people are devoted to their candidates. While it is great to be enthusiastic about your candidate and political party, it can also create divides between your family and friends.
I come from a family that is incredibly passionate about their political party. However, the only dilemma is, I am not a part of said party, in fact, I am quite the opposite. I do not side with the politics I was raised on. I have different views and opinions than my family, which can create a problem for me. I have been in countless heated political debates with my family members about this election season and the candidates running. Sometimes these debates get a little too intense and hurtful words can be said. This election has gotten so brutal it has brought out a side of the American people we didn't know existed. It has drawn out hatred and a vulgarness I didn't know people were capable of. People are disregarding their loved ones over our next president.
I'm here to say that this election should never come before your loving relationships between you and your family and friends. I know some people who have ended relationships or stopped talking to loved ones because this presidential election has created such a divide between them. This nation has grown exceptionally bitter towards each other over this past year. Politics is a very touchy subject that most people tip toe around. When people do talk politics we tend to get angry and defensive of our beliefs rather than having a calm rational discussion. I think people have forgotten the phrase "agree to disagree." I think people have forgotten, especially during this election season, how to respect others opinions. Not everyone will agree with you, and that's okay. If someone has a difference of beliefs that does not make them any less of a person, ignorant, or wrong. The world would be a boring place if everyone had the exact same thought process.
At the end of the day, everyone will be okay no matter the results. Sure, some may not be happy about them, but ultimately the two candidates are fighting to help better the American people. No matter your political party, your relationships come first. We have to look at the bigger picture in front of us. We are people before we are our politics. We have to treat each other with respect and continue to love each other no matter our beliefs.
