With the holidays coming up, it can be easy to get lost in the hustle and bustle of it all. But, my friends, it can also be easy to forget the true reason for the season and all of the wonderful things that we should be grateful for. This week, I talked to some friends (and strangers) and asked what they were thankful for and why, because we should never lose sight of the good things.

1. “My mom”

“I’m really thankful for my mom, because she is always there for me and she is the most loving woman ever. I don’t know what I would do without her.”

2. “My brother’s health”

“Last year, my brother was battling cancer and with a lot of prayer, he is doing much better now. I am so thankful that he is in good health now and he is able to spend the holidays with us this time."

3. "Food on my table"

"I am thankful that I don't starve and that I have food on the table for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. My parents have always made sure that I am fed, since as long as I can remember."

4. "My fiancé"

"I am really blessed that I met my fiancé, because I really struggled in the dating game for so many years. I am just really happy that I can now spend the rest of my life with someone that I really love and have been waiting for my whole life. It's nice that the holidays are coming around too, so I can be with him at this time of the year."

5. "My dog"

"My dog is so cute and I am glad that I have her here with me. She makes all the bad days good and when I come home from a long day, she's always so happy to see me. So, yeah, I'm really grateful for my dog. She is getting a nice present for our first Christmas together."

6. "My daughter"

"I'm so grateful for my daughter. I got pregnant at such a weird time in my life, but she makes everything worth it. She motivates me to finish school and get my degree in Sociology, so I can work my butt off to give her everything that I didn't have growing up."

7. "School"

"I'm thankful that I can go to a university and that I am finishing school. None of my family ever went to college, so I'm happy that I get the opportunity to come here and get a degree and make my family in Texas proud of me. I know that in the end, all of this hard work will definitely be worth it."

8. "My grandma"

"Both of my parents were never really my parents, so my grandma stepped up and took the role of both. She gave me everything she could and always told me that I could do anything that I set my mind to. I don't know where I would be without her. She really is my everything."

9. "Home"

"I'm grateful that I have a loving home to come to at Thanksgiving. I wouldn't trade it for the world. I am so freakin' blessed, when I think about it. Not everyone has a place to call home."

10. "Everything"

"I live a really good life. I have my family, two good jobs, and I'm going to school. On top of that, I'm pretty healthy overall. I'm thankful for literally everything. God has given me such a good life and I don't take it for granted at all. I'm a grateful man."

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
