I can remember the day vividly. The sun was shining, the radio was on; my parents (who had finally come to their senses and listened to me) and I were on our way to gain what we didn’t then realize, would change our lives forever.
I was SO excited, we were gaining another family member- but one with four legs! None of us had any knowledge that bringing home our beloved Crystal May that spring day from a run-down animal shelter would be one of the most significant decisions for our tiny little family. She was a full blown mutt, found wandering the streets and she became my best friend. We gave her a chance, and she gave us joy that we never could have imagined. A rescue who rescued us. That was one of the best days of my life, and a few months ago I had to say goodbye to someone I loved with all my heart after 15 wonderful years together.
So then, what happens after that, what comes next? What is actually the best way to honor the lost pet/family member? Well, I tend to take the angle that the answer is not to “never replace” them or say “you’ve done your part.” In fact it would be the exact opposite, to honor their life by opening up your heart for another rescue. I believe that’s what would make my adored Crystal May up in Dog Heaven the happiest - to give another stray, neglected or abused animal the chance to feel the love they deserve; and that’s what I intend to do. What people may not realize is that “owning a pet” is so much more than just that.
Rescuing brings about such a different perspective. You literally save a life, and they return that favor with emotions that you could never explain- and I challenge others to do so. “You haven’t truly lived until you can do something for someone who can never repay you”.-John Bunyan
My point here is not just another childhood story, it’s that even small decisions and acts of kindness can begin a chain reaction of changing the world. Saving an animal not only changes their life but also changes yours, in ways that you may not realize until later. The compassion you learn is irreplaceable, you begin to understand empathy, and appreciate life on such a different level. Some tend to say things like “well, you can’t save them all” and perhaps that is true, but you can certainly try.
