Patrick Toohey: The Rookie of Odyssey Colgate
Patrick Toohey

There are Colgate University students and then they are Odyessy content creators. But, then there is Patrick Toohey who is both a content creator for the Odyssey and a Colgate student. Not only is he involved with the Odyssey he is also a Green Ambassador, in Chorus and Chamber Singers, and in WRCU. As you can tell he is very busy especially for only being a first-year student. Patrick’s favorite part of Colgate so far is WRCU, the radio station on the Colgate Campus. His other favorite part of Colgate is Lambda, which is a safe space for LGBTQIA-identifying students on Colgate's campus.

He intends to major in Spanish and minor in International Relations. He loves international travel and it is something he looks forward to doing later in life. His favorite place that he is ever traveled is Amsterdam. Currently, his favorite class is his FSEM (First-Year Seminar) called Global Peace and War. However, Patrick’s journey to Hamilton, New York started in his hometown of Columbus, Ohio. His favorite part of his hometown is that is where a lot of statistical research is done. Where he is the oldest of five siblings, with two sisters and two brothers. In Ohio, he has two dogs a pug and a mini golden doodle along with one cat. Patrick feels the isolation of Hamilton, New York, but he does not mind the change; it is just different than he is used to. His favorite movie is “The Way He Looks” which is a Portuguese movie about a blind kid. His favorite candy to eat while watching his favorite movie is Sour Patch Kids. His biggest fear is that people secretly don’t like him. However, it is hard to believe that anyone would not like Patrick. He enjoys singing due to his love for music. He is also very into photography and has a huge follower base on instagram (popgoestheginger). He has Instagram followers in the thousands. Along with writing, photography allows him a creative outlet which he can interact with other people; as long as he isn't watching American Story. When asked why he loved AHS, Patrick said, “American Horror Story is the best because it’s a perfect representation and commentary on American culture while also including amazing acting and some scary stuff”. His favorite music artist is Banks. Earlier this year he wrote an Odyssey article all about Banks. He ended his article with a strong line saying, “She understands that what she does is virtuous, and the countless victims of emotional abuse deserve to hear more music like hers”.

To end this piece about Patrick, it would only be suiting to end with his favorite quote. The quote is from his favorite book, The Dinner by Herman Koch: “If I had to give a definition of happiness, it would this: happiness needs nothing but itself; it doesn’t have to be validated”.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
