Past, Present, and Future Teachers, This One's For You

Past, Present, and Future Teachers, This One's For You

I remember the first time it happened. One of my parent's friends asked me what I had decided to major in at my high school graduation party and I responded that I was an Education major. "But you're so smart!" she said with a half smile on her face and a slightly disappointed tone in her voice. It was as if I had decided to live at home for the rest of my life and never wanted to attempt to pursue a career, like I was wasting my potential on something that didn't even matter.

Since then, I have had countless people ask me in a slightly condescending ways "just why" I want to be a teacher. I've heard everything from "You do realize that teachers make no money, right?" and "But you have so much to offer.." to "It's going to be hard to stay happy making that small of a salary."

Sorry, I forgot. It is both physically impossible and a crime for me to be happy unless I am making a six-figure salary. Although, there is absolutely nothing wrong with making a six-figure salary, there is equally nothing wrong with making less than that.

Alright, I am done ranting about money-- onto the point of this article.

I cannot tell you the amount of times that I have heard parents boasting about how wonderful their children's teachers are and what an incredible impact the are having.

Imagine that: Teachers are actually doing something worthwhile.

Here's the thing- we aren't Education majors because we think it'll be fun to not make any money. We aren't Education majors because we couldn't think of anything else to do. Most importantly, we aren't Education Majors because we don't care.

We know that if there aren't educators out there to motivate and inspire students to excel in their academics, that they might not go to college. We know that if we aren't there to encourage a student who has a terrible home life, they might not make it through the week. We know that if we help a student discover their passion, countless doors can be opened for them. We know that our job will go far beyond 3:30 afternoon on weekdays, and we know that it is so much more than teaching material to students. Robert Frost said it best when he said, "I am not a teacher, but an awakener."

So here's to you, past, present, and future educators. If it weren't for you, some of the world's greatest leader's wouldn't have been created, disease-curing research wouldn't have been successful, and students around the world wouldn't realize what they're capable of.

"Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire."- William Butler Yeast

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
