4 Things I'm Grateful For As My First Pandemic Holiday Season Approaches

As crazy as 2020 has been, it's refreshing to think about everything I'm thankful for during the holiday season.

We all know that this holiday season is going to be different than most. With COVID-19 still posing a threat to many, state representatives have called for people to not celebrate the holidays this year. In spite of all of the chaos that's erupting in America, it can be hard to think of things that we are grateful for. So I decided to come up with a list of some things that I'm grateful for this year.

1. My Family

This one is a given. My family and I are closer than most. I was raised by a single mom and with two sisters. This year, more than ever, I'm grateful to still have them around. They've supported me going to school out of state during the pandemic.

My mom, in particular, is someone I'm especially grateful for. Due to COVID-19 and her own medical issues, I haven't been able to see her since she dropped me off at school in August. I can imagine other out of state students have struggled with similar circumstances this semester. She's my best friend, and I'm so thankful to have such a supportive, loving, and strong woman as a mom.

Seeing the amount of people who have lost family members due to COVID-19 made me realize how lucky I am that none of us have contracted the virus. For those who lost family members this year, the holiday season can be especially difficult. I think this year has been a reminder to many to appreciate those around you.

2. My Friends

Once again, I feel like this is a no-brainer. I've managed to still make new friends while at school, even without events. Social distancing has made it more difficult to make friends this semester, so I'm especially thankful for those I have. Old and new, my circle is what keeps me going.

Having friends that can make you laugh when you're upset, or who you can mess around with, is vital to getting through college. The stress of online classes, drama, and just the world as a whole can be a lot to process on your own. Whether it's through Zoom or hanging out in person while still social distancing, we've managed to make the most out of our situation.

3. Harry Styles

This one may seem a little weird. During the pandemic, his videos and music are what got me through, though. He released the "Golden" music video most recently, which was immaculate. If you haven't seen it, I recommend giving it a watch. For me, Harry Styles is one of those people that radiates positivity. That positivity has enabled me to stay positive during this turbulent year. Not to mention, focusing on his music, and most recently his Vogue photo shoot has been a great distraction when I need it most.

4. My Pets

Yet again, I feel like this is an easy answer. I have eight cats at home. My favorite is my munchkin cat. He's the cutest. Anyways, they are great for entertainment, and they are a joy to have around. I feel like anyone who has a pet can attest to the fact that just having them around is comforting.

Being away from school, and not having them around anymore, was difficult to get used to. I missed the comfort of them hanging out on my bed while doing work. But not having them at school made me appreciate them even more, especially during the holidays. Who doesn't love dressing up their pets in elf costumes? It's adorable.

I know it's a small list, but writing this article made me ready for the holiday season. Whether you're spending it with friends, family, or whoever, it's the perfect time to appreciate those around you.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
