It happens to the very best of us. And it sucks, so much. It's as if your brain just completely gives up, but you still have so much more to write. School is coming to a close, but if necessary, use this as a guide if you're writing a last-minute assignment, a diary entry, or hey...even an Odyssey article! Let's get started, shall we?
1. Freewrite.
Go at it. Write whatever comes to your mind. It may be funny—or even sad. Just write whatever you feel like and trust me, you'll get your inspiration back in no time.
2. Make some coffee (or tea).
Turn on that Keurig and get things rollin'. Coffee is the absolute best at getting your brain energized and make ideas come to you much quicker.
3. Eliminate any distractions.
Turn your phone on do not disturb mode and turn off the TV. Trust me, these are some of the easiest devices to get dragged into. If you're awful with getting distracted, ask a family member or friend to keep your phone with them until you're completely finished. That way, you'll be able to work a lot more diligently and not crumble under the pressure of looking at that tweet from your favorite celeb. Also, ommwriter is a cheap investment that I personally use, and I love it as well to stay on track of my writing.
4. Listen to music.
Plug your headphones in and turn Pandora on. This is also an amazing way to get your brain to turn off that block and reconnect to what you were originally writing. As much as you love Rihanna's album or Fifth Harmony's new song, studies have shown that listening to classical or jazz music is a tremendous help in stretching imagination, as well as helping in problem-solving. But if you're looking to get energized and pumped for your upcoming writing assignment—then hey, go at it and play the jams.
5. Spend some time with a good friend.
I can't even begin to count how many occasions I have personally done this. Sometimes, you're just not able to get the words down whatsoever, and hanging out with a friend always seems to help afterwards. (P.S. Big thank you to my roomie, Jade, who was that good friend I went to when I was hardcore struggling with writing).
Writer's block is the devil's creation and it absolutely stinks. But I can only help that I've helped just a little bit with whatever writing project your stuck on. Good luck!
