20 Signs You're An English Major
The Balance

Being an English major is one of the best decisions I have ever made. From the engaging discussions in class, to the hilarious professors, to reading and exploring new books, being an English major is great. Even though you have to stay up late writing 10-page papers, you know that you wouldn't want to major in anything else.

1. Reading is always homework.

You love homework.

2. You don't have exams. You just have a million papers.

Which means that you can go home earlier than all of your friends.

3. You edit and read over all of your friends' papers.

They all know that you know what you're talking about.

4. You have a million highlighters, sticky notes and pens.

Because you're always taking notes when you're reading.

5. You can quote Shakespeare.

Let's be real, name one English class that they haven't at least mentioned the guy.

6. You can write a paper in one sitting.

I'm not saying it's a good one, but you can definitely make great progress.

7. You have to buy or rent too many books each semester.

Because you read a different one each week in each English class.

8. You can read relatively quickly.

Because let's face it, you probably have to read over 100 pages a night in some classes.

9. You love the library, and probably coffee.

There's nowhere better than to write a paper than in a quiet library and sipping coffee.

10. You have a good relationship with Sparknotes.

Sparknotes is always there to catch you when you fall.

11. You read many of the same books and plays.

I've lost sight of how many times I have had to read "Great Expectations."

12. You use "I'm an English major" as an excuse if you do poorly in math or science.

Because you can't be great at everything.

13. You cringe whenever somebody uses incorrect grammar.

14. You're a dreamer because you've spent half of your life reading books.

15. But you're also dramatic because half of those books ends with at least half of the characters killing each other.

16. You have a specific spot that you always write papers.

Because you wouldn't be able to focus anywhere else.

17. You have strong feelings about every book that you read and get attached to the characters, especially when they're crazy.

18. You always have great book recommendations to give to friends, or anybody that will listen.

19. You over-analyze and over-think everything.

Because that's what you've learned to do from reading so much.

20. The professors are always so different from each other and amazing.

Because who doesn't like a witty English professor?

21. The people you meet in your classes are great.

You meet people who are so similar to yourself and love to read as much as you do.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
