The phrase "best friend" is singular and frankly, has a stronger connotation behind it with the emphasis coming from the word "best." So, when we think of this phrase we automatically associate this idea with a singular person who plays an important role in our lives.
As our lives go on and we continue to meet new people, it's almost like the "best friend" title becomes something that we all die to earn amongst our peers.
Some people believe a person can only have one best friend. There's really only one person out there who you will tell anything to and do anything for.
Others believe, no, it's possible to have more than one. You're going to have different relationships with different people and conversations may come up that pertain to one friend, but have nothing to do with another and that's something that each of you can bond over separately.
It really just depends on the lifestyle of that individual, and knowing more people is going to allow that individual to see numerous people they consider to be "best friends" throughout their lives.
But here's where things get tricky. While, most believe that it is possible to have multiple "best friends," we often find ourselves still vying for that top spot on our friend's list of reliable people, almost like we're trying to be THE "best friend."
You could call it an obsession or desire to always want to be your friend's number one go-to person. And this feeling is not brought on maliciously, but instead from their devotion as a friend to always want to keep a strong bond between one another for as long as they can.
So, in a way, it could be good to always inhabit this "obsession" because it just makes an individual want to be a better friend in the end.
