Our Fires

We all started with a fire in us.

What is that feeling that keeps you going even when things are difficult, or seem to be impossible? It pushes you forward when the world is forcing you backward. That feeling is a fire. This fire can either be hard to extinguish or easy to let go of. Depending on what type of a person you are, the fire either grows or dulls. My question to my readers this week is: Which type of person are you? There truly are two types of people in this world. Everyone started out with a fire. You are either the person that nourishes the fire or the person that dulled it a long time ago.

Fire is a force to be reckoned with once it is lit. We all started with a fire whether you believe it or not. There is something that ignites your spirit. Our fires are sparked by our passions, and are expanded by our ambitions. How bright does your fire burn?

A lot of people gave up on their passions a long time ago. These types of people are called settlers. Settlers used to have fires, but they settled in attempt to be “safe” and “realistic." Settlers never believed in their fires so they dulled them. They tend to say things like, “That’s not a real job”, “You won’t make money from that," or “Believing in yourself and chasing your dreams? That’s cliche b.s. You know that, right?” Settlers do not realize that they are victims of fear. They are afraid to take risks and big chances, but that is what life is about. If you are afraid to do what you love, you are dulling your fire.

Twenty One Pilots said it best, “We used to play pretend, give each other different names. We would build a rocket ship and then we'd fly it far away. Used to dream of outer space but now they're laughing at our face, Saying, "Wake up, you need to make money"”. They wanted to go back in time because they had fires then, and they were fearless.

There are also people that let their passion and ambition ignite their fire brighter and brighter. These people are doers. They know how to dream big, and refuse to let their spirit to be broken by anyone. They can deal with the world calling them crazy, and their fires burn all the negativity away. They turn “pipe dreams” into realities, and that is the beauty of trying. Even if you try and it doesn’t work, no one denies your right to try again or try a different method. Doers will do whatever it takes to achieve their goals, and that is why they are successful. Doers surprise you with what they can achieve whether you believed in them or not.

It’s never too late to nourish your fire. Whether you gave up years ago, feel discouraged, or have a lot of fire in you. You are in control of your own life. You don’t get hand the remote to someone else, and free yourself from blame. Every decision, every situation, every opportunity, every thought is all your choice. These are my questions to you: Which person are you? And is this the person you wanted to become?

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
