Freshman Fears 101: OSU Edition

From an incoming freshman herself, trust me, I know.

So it goes without saying that being a freshman means having an unchangeable reputation among the rest of the upperclassmen. And for a college student especially, it's knowing that you have that reputation that makes it that much worse. Like yes, I know I'm a freshman, and I know what that automatically does to me. High school first year all over again. But other than the wrath that the freshman reputation brings, there's also a lot more for a freshman to fear as they enter their first year. And here's to name a few...

1. Not finding friends

Because friends are kinda like everything, right? What's some good Chipotle without someone even better to share it with? And what's a movie night without others to commentate on everything that happens. Basically, friends are some of the best parts of life. College can be so difficult meeting all these new people and trying to figure out who to trust and who not to. So this fear easily wins spot number one.

2. Missing family too much

So friends may be one of the best parts of life, but right alongside them lies family too. The people who have known you since before you even knew what life itself was. Your family is there through it all and sees you as the person you are. Sometimes, they even know you better than yourself. So anyone who says they won't miss them...well they're probably lying.

3. Having frequent breakdowns

We've all heard of the typical stressed college student. Crying, failing, and resorting to limitless ice cream to fulfill the guilt of getting a D on the last exam. So how can we not imagine ourselves one day going through the same misery? Maybe it's a byproduct of missing friends and family too but regardless, breakdowns are a constant fear.

4. Gaining the freshman 15

Another freshmen year myth...or so we hope. With limitless dining food and off-campus options, it's so easy to see how this could come true. Our once active and toned thighs turned to mushy jello. Because if high school was for sports, college will be for partying and celebrating.

5. Having a haunted dorm

Ghosts? Nope, don't mess with those things. At tOSU, there's an ongoing rumor that Morrill Tower remains haunted by the ghost of Jeffrey Dahmer aka a Cannibal. So though this may seem far-fetched to some that someone could have a haunted dorm, all I gotta say is that it is actually quite possible. And unbelievably horrifying.

6. Ending up with a terrible roommate

We've all heard the horror stories that come along with freshman roomies. Ya know, first year. You go random because you don't know anyone else. Or go with someone you THINK you would get along with only to end up with a messy slob that only goes to class one day a week and doesn't even speak English. Yep, but you're roomies so #besties

7. Failing a class

It's not hard to know that high school and college don't even compare. Responsibility becomes on your own, and if you decide you don't want to go to class or do an assignment, no one will be there to truly reprimand you. And for some, this seriously hurts them to the point that they'll end up failing a class. Yeah as an incoming freshman, I'm praying not to be one of those.

8. Not knowing how to study

Alright, you may look at this one and laugh but really, for some, high school was a breeze. Listen in class and you can easily keep subpar good grades. But again college is all what you put on yourself and seriously, like what if I just don't study properly and still fail?! Yeah, back to number 7.

9. Not having enough space in your dorm

Because sticking you in a ten by ten space with one other person is seriously frightening. Like how the heck am I supposed to fit all my clothes in a three-foot closet and two drawers? For those in quads... Good Luck Charlie.

10. Getting lost around campus

THE Ohio State University is HUGE, and I mean HUGE. This whole campus is like the size of my town!!! And it took me like ten years to find my way around my own small town. Getting lost? Definitely gonna happen.

11. Being late for the first class

First impressions. It's all about the first impression you make on someone. But like, what if my first impression ends up being me 10 minutes late after walking 3 miles in the rain just to find a stupid building all the way across campus? Not the greatest impression.

12. Trouble paying for college

It ain't cheap going to college and that's for sure. Like what if I don't get scholarships and can't afford it? What if I have to drop out because I can't afford it?

13. Missing pets too much

You know that feeling when you come home and you're so exhausted or down on yourself and all of a sudden, your dog comes up wagging its tail because it's so excited to see you. That's what makes college so depressing-- like what if I can't live without my dog? Is it too late to register her as a service dog?

14. Not having a cute dorm

The twinkle lights. Polaroids. Tapestries. Pinterest has set some pretty high expectations for what the cutest college dorms look like and thanks to Instagram, it's suddenly become a thing to post a picture in your freshman dorm. Like what if my dorm isn't as cute as everyone else's?! What if I don't have money for cute decorations?

15. Running out of money on your BuckID

What if I use, like, all my swipes in the week and then run out of money for food? Like I can't go without eating. I love eating too much. I NEED to eat.

So basically, being a freshman ain't all rainbows and butterflies. Incoming freshman, like myself, I hope you relate. Here's to going through this haunted house called Ohio State together. Holding hands of course. And I'm not leading.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
