With the Oscars just around the corner, many people are going into critic mode with every single movie they see. Normal civilians loaded with nothing but popcorn and candy try to take on the big screen. This time of year, critically acclaimed directors start to pump out their best work with one objective in mind- winning best picture at the Academy Awards. Here are five films that will be nominated for such an award.
1. "The Big Short"
Description: An interesting film about four strangers predicting the crash of the housing Market in the mid 2000’s. Directed by Adam McKay, the genius who co-wrote "Anchorman," "The Other Guys," and "Talladega Nights," this film will be a roller coaster ride in itself.
Why it's going to be nominated? Looking at this film the first thing you notice is the star studded cast. All four of the leading actors in the film have been nominated for a best actor. Standout Steve Carell, with his surprise role in Foxcatcher last year, is sure to be nominated again. With the home run cast and a witty director, this film is sure to knock your socks off.
2. "The Martian"
Description: "The Martian" is an intergalactic thriller that will put "Interstellar" to shame. It is about a botanist that somehow gets stuck on Mars…how did he get there? Does a botanist really have anything to do with Mars? I don't know, but somehow it works.
Why is this going to be nominated? There was more hype for this film than "High School Musical 2." Anybody with a case of over anxiety should take their medicine before watching this film, as it keeps you on your toes the entire time. With leading actor Matt Damon teaming up with the director of the cult classic "Blade Runner," Ridley Scott, this film is nothing but extraordinary.
3. "The Hateful Eight"
Description: Expect swear words…a lot of swear words. Oh, also buckets of blood being splattered at the screen with every gunshot. This is a three hour long epic in which all the characters are supposedly stranded in one place the entire time. We’ll see how that goes.
Why is it going to be nominated? There is a serious cult following of Quentin Tarantino fans that will keep these film going. Each one of Tarantino films are unique in their own way. Did I mention that Samuel L. Jackson is going to star in this film? This man has never disappointed in any of Tarantino's films, so it is bound to be a western classic.
4. "The Revenant"
Description: Nobody has seen this film yet, but Leonardo Dicaprio is giving yet another shot to win the Oscar for Best Actor. Based in the 1800’s, Hugh Glass (Dicaprio) seeks vengeance on a man that left him for dead. Armed with a Industrial Age musket we will see if he will actually be able to hit the man.
Why is it going to be Nominated? After winning the Oscar for best actor last year, director Alejandro González Iñárritu has a lot of hype to live up to. Last year he won for the film "Birdman," but this film is on a completely different hemisphere. It's going to be a surprise to all film lovers. But the real question everybody is asking, will Leo get snubbed for yet another Oscar?
5. "Inside Out"
Description: This film is a Pixar twist on an adolescent girl going through puberty. As expected from Pixar, it's an emotional roller coaster for a child, as well as your girlfriend that is a sap for every film that has puppies and cute cartoons.
Why is it going to be nominated? Pixar has some of the best writers in the movie industry. They somehow find a way to attracted little kids while keeping it funny and interesting for their parents. This is an algorithm that every other film maker cannot figure out and is why every single one of their films are so successful.
