You only live once.

Opportunities You Should Say YOLO To

Sometimes things come along and you aren’t sure how to react to them. Some things you should definitely be cautious about, but if no one is going to be hurt in the process, I say go for it.

Here are some things you should say YOLO to.

Challenging yourself

I did not apply to be a writer for The Odyssey because I see myself as an amazing writer with all the knowledge that you fine people need to know. I did it to prove to myself that I could. It’s fun and always interesting to try to come up with a new topic every week.

Doing something just to say you did

I’m not talking about something crazy or life threatening. I’m also not talking about something that would get you into trouble, just something funny that people can laugh about or be amazed at when you tell them about it. Last year I was sitting in my dorm room and I decided to see what it took to become and ordained minister online. About five minutes later I was reading a confirmation email explaining my ordination. And about a week ago I got another email congratulating me on being an ordained minister for a year. I haven’t officiated any weddings or anything, but when I tell people I’m always sure to get a laugh.

Getting ice cream

Or really any food (especially late at night). You know you want to get some frozen custard after the long day you had. Do it. I’m telling you that it’s ok.

Anything brave

Whether it's standing up for something you believe in or talking to someone new you should just realize that it's always better to say it than to wish you had later. If someone says something mean or they say something that you don’t appreciate stand up to them. If you know the answer to something that others are clearly confused about, show off your knowledge. Even trying a new haircut or something like that. What’s the worst that could happen?

Road trips with your besties

As long as you have the time and the money you should definitely go for it. Never say no to a road trip.

When you say to yourself, “you only live once” you are allowing yourself to be open to new experiences. I’m sure that there are plenty of other new things to try that I left off this list. I would like to add that saying Yolo is not an excuse to go out and do something really dumb that could negatively affect yourself or others. Just go live a little and have some fun. YOLO

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
