I am one of the very few people that does not feel the need to spew my opinion out into the world. Whether it is about politics or other controversial subjects in our society, it is none of your damn business. And here's why:
My opinion is my opinion and it only holds significant value to me. My opinions are part of who I am as a person and they were developed based on my own personal moral compass. Think of it like an item you bought. You go out to a store and you buy a pair of shoes. Why did you buy them? Well, they match a particular outfit. Or maybe they are the first pair of shoes that are actually comfortable on your feet. Maybe they are your favorite color. You see my point? They complement your life and it makes sense for you to own them because of that.
So why would my shoe purchase matter to you? Why would my finding shoes in the perfect shade of blue matter to you? I don't know about you, but I really would not care about what shoes you are wearing because it does not impact my life in a significant manner. The same goes for opinions. Why does my opinion on the national debt matter to you? Are you going to change it? Probably not. Are you going to agree? Probably not. Are you going to think differently of me if my opinion differs from yours, even though neither one of us really knows much about the national debt? Probably.
That is exactly why my opinion is none of your damn business. Unless you are a lobbyist and you are going to stand up for my beliefs in front of our government, I don't see a reason why my opinion should mean jack sh*t to you. Is knowing my beliefs going to change your beliefs? Probably not. It's probably just going to piss you off in all honesty.
Maybe it's just me but sharing your opinion on social media or in class, or anywhere for that matter, never ends well. Someone is going to disagree and voice their opinion in response to you voicing your opinion and that is going to lead to drama. A lot of drama. And drama means stress.
Unfortunately we have grown into a society where other people's opinions are automatically wrong. To some extent we have become extremists with our views and heaven forbid someone does not agree that the sky was purple on August 24, 2013 at 7:48 p.m.. All hell will break loose. But why? Was the sky purple? Maybe. Could it have been orange or blue or a mixture? Of course. But does that have any bearing on your life right now? No. Is my opinion of abortion going to change the course of your day? I sure hope not.
Sharing your opinion may attract people with similar views as you and that can be nice. You can make new friends and grow your friend network. But how many times have you posted a strongly worded status update and had no one disagree? I know I have never been that lucky. I posted about how scared my sister was after a mass shooting and everyone and their mother decided to make it a gun debate and not one person asked how my sister was. Not one person asked if she knew anyone in the club that night. Everyone made it about themselves. I learned a lesson that day. That lesson was that my opinion doesn't actually mean anything to anyone besides me. People don't actually care about what your opinion is because the second they realize you're voicing an opinion, they start thinking of ways to spew their opinion your way.
My point is that my opinion is none of your damn business because you don't actually care about it. If I said that I don't support feminism or that I do support Hillary or that potatoes are disgusting, then you're probably already forming a rebuttal in your head that has everything to do with your opinion and nothing to do with mine. That is why I don't share my opinions. Because it causes drama and I believe my opinions are the best view, but you may not and that is okay. So I'm going to save us both drama and keep my opinion to myself because we don't actually listen or understand other views. We jus shout ours from the rooftops and stomp on the ones we don't understand.
