An Open Letter To My Younger Brothers

From Your Older Sister

An Open Letter To My Younger Brothers
Renee Hack

Dear younger brothers,

Over the many years of living under the same roof, there are a couple things I would like to tell you that I never realized I would wind up feeling or saying.

I miss you.

Yes, I really honestly do miss you both with all of my heart. I miss our 2 a.m. talks in my room, goofing around instead of doing homework or chores, our weird jokes, sitting at the dinner table and debating over the most random crap. I miss seeing your faces, hearing your voices, calling me my standard nicknames, watching movies like "Lord of The Rings," "Harry Potter" and "Mean Girls." I miss your brutal honesty, your sarcasm (although sometimes it’s really crappy), and I even miss being annoyed by you on rare occasions — don’t get any ideas when I get back. But I know at the end of the day, when I come home it’s so much sweeter seeing and chilling with you guys.

I love you.

I don’t say it enough, but I love you goofballs. I love you to the moon and back. If you don’t know already or haven’t figured it out, I’d do (almost) anything for you. And don’t ever think I hate you even after we get into fights. Always keep this in mind during your best and worst days.

Okay, now after getting all that soft crap out of my system, there’s also a few things that you both taught me over the past 16 years that I wish to share with you and the world.

You are really my best friends that I am related to.

You know me better than I know myself. I tell you idiots basically everything, and I know pretty much everything about you both. We do stupid crap together like best friends. We see each other at our best and worst moments. We don’t have to talk to have fun, but as long as we are in each other’s presence, we do wind up having a pretty bomb time. We have inside jokes we made years ago that we still laugh about to this day. We have an unspoken language and know when to help a sibling out — shout out to the time you let me sleep extra when mom and dad were bringing groceries in and we had to help. You also give me advice despite being the younger siblings. But most of all, I can always count on you guys whenever and wherever.

You support me even when I am not living at home.

It’s hard not physically having you guys around all the time especially for important events in my life. For example, it honestly sucked not seeing you guys in the crowd the day of my first fashion show when I released my very first finished collection. But I know you guys were at home feeling proud of being related to me. When I have bad days, I can always shoot you guys a text in our group chat and know you can cheer me up. You help me get into my zone for game day (thank you for that too) and will even text me just to tell me I’ll do great. You guys are a part of my core support system and are a part of my motivation in life because I want you guys to be proud of the sister/woman/lady I’ve become. I know you’ll always be proud even if I make mistakes. And thanks for having my back. I appreciate having you guys spotting me.

Thank you boys for all the things you’ve done for me. My life would be so much less interesting without you. I love you to the moon and back.

With sincere love from college,

Your older sister

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
