An Open Letter To Myself In 10 Years

I hope that you're happy.

An Open Letter To Myself In 10 Years
Hailey Valasek

Dear Future Me,

Right now it's 2016 and a lot has happened this year.

In January you turned 18, in February you got your first job, and in May you graduated from high school. You didn't go to college right away and that's okay. A lot of people take time off to figure out what they really want to do. I know you're stressed right now with work and trying to figure out what is best for you in this life, but everything will work out. It may not be right away but everything happens at different paces for different people.

In 10 years it will be 2026 and you will be 28. I hope and pray that you are happy. The kind of happy like when you see a dog on the street and it comes running toward you with its tail wagging. I hope you went back to school and that you found something that you are passionate about. Who knows, maybe your dreams of being on TV or being a singer came true. As long as you worked and fought hard to get wherever you are right now.

I hope that you have a wonderful family. I hope that you found someone who lights a fire in your body and sets your soul on fire. I hope that you still get butterflies when you're with him and that he makes you feel safe and loved.

I hope that you got to travel to places you've never been but had always wanted to see. I hope that you took chances in your life and lived a little. I hope that you got to do things that you were too afraid to do.

Most of all, it's 10 years later and I just want you to know that I am proud of you.

Love,

Your 18 year old self.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
