An Open Letter to Winter

Dear Winter,

It's me, Dakota. Hi, yes how are you? Cold you say.

Yeah I know. I know it very well.

For the past two months, you have made my skin dry, my eyes water, my nose run and my tan fade. I can no longer go outside without three jackets and a scarf. My beloved Rainbow sandals and shorts have been wasting away in my closet for so long. It will be months before they see the light of day, which really makes me sad. Why must you be so harsh and unpredictable? Summer is never this cruel to me.

So winter, please, cut me some slack. I can only like wearing my jacket for a couple of days before I have try hard to pretend it does not bother me. Deep down it really bothers me that I can't walk outside in my cute jacket without having a huge raincoat that covers it up.

Orange County never got as cold as Oregon does. I am still not used to it even though it is my second winter in. I am afraid I will won't ever get used to it. The cold does bother me contrary to popular belief. Yes, I love the rain and snow. But no, I don't like the 25 mile per hour winds and the wind chill.

Yes, I know. I moved to a place where winter is real. That is my fault. Winter in Oregon is not all cute rain boots and flannels. It is wearing a hood because it is raining and having the wind blow it right off. It is practicing your sport and having to pretend that running through the rain and wind doesn't make you run slow.

My hands have never been so cold in my life. Who knew your hands turned red so quickly? (Not me!) Yes I know gloves are a thing but even with gloves my hands still turn cold.

So please winter, cut me, an Orange County girl, some slack.

I really need it.

-Dakota

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
