To Whom it May Concern,
Recently, the Oscar nominations have sparked some controversy. The awards show is to premiere on February 28th, with Chris Rock to host. The nominations have completely snubbed all black actors. Even "Straight Outta Compton" didn’t get their rightful nomination. (Which only got nominated for Writing [Original Screenplay.]) So black people were snubbed at the Oscars. There are protests planned, people are asking Chris Rock to step down from being the host. (To which Chris Rock responded that he continue to host the Oscars.)
Then, even more recently, Beyonce’s performance at the Super Bowl has caused even more controversy. Her performance of the song, "Formation," where her backup dancers were dressed as Black Panthers, and how her entire song is about the oppression of the black community has proved that white supremacy is still very much a real thing. People are outraged, thinking that Beyonce is out to attack all white people, that her part of the halftime show has started this revolution to end white people.
With both of these events going on, in addition to Sandra Bland, Trayvon Martin, and countless others, a race revolution seems to be on the rise. And white people are pissed.
So, to preface this next part of the article: pro-black does not mean anti-white. No. Don’t argue with me. I’m too stubborn, you’ll lose. Pro-black does not mean anti-white. This movement is for equality, not to bash other races. So that being said -- no. Beyonce does not hate white people. She’s not trying to send out some message to defeat all white people.
On the flipside, it does say that the Oscars are oppressing black people. I know, your first question is: how can Beyonce not be racist with that dance, but the Oscars are racist with their nominations? And the answer is, White privilege. Yes, white people live their lives every day without the nagging worry in the back of their mind that a cop might shoot them down. (No, this is also not an article bashing cops. Both of my uncles are cops. I know not all cops are bad.) White people get to go on job interviews knowing that they’re automatically more likely to get the job just because of their skin color. It's racist because it’s not promoting equality,
The next question you should be asking is: Yes, so then, how do we stop this inequality of the races? Well, that’s a tricky one. To sit people down, make them learn about the injustices in this country, that’s hard to do. A lot of people don’t like to listen. So, find your friends. Start educating yourselves. Participate in the Black Lives Matter movements. (Yes, white people can participate in those, too.) Make sure your friends know that you’re supporting them. Just remember, this isn’t about white people. This is about them and their movement. We have what we need, white people are doing just fine. So, take a deep breath. Because this movement isn’t about hurting white people, it’s about helping black people.
Sincerely,
You're friendly neighborhood liberal
