An Open Letter To My College Friends

We may not have been friends very long yet, but I know that this friendship is one I hope to have for many years.

First of all, I just want to thank you.

Thank you for the nights when you let me come back to rant.

I know that when I’ve had a long day or need someone to lean on that you’re there. You listen to me whine about pointless things that don’t even really impact me. You even listen when I’m going on useless tangents about the latest drama, or the fact that I think I want to change my life plan for the 50th time that day alone.

Thank you for the nights when I just want to go get food.

It’s crazy just how much you support late night snacks with me. You run to the café or just heat up some mac ‘n cheese with me. Thank you for all of the nights when I want a late night shake and you go with me. Whether it is while we’re sitting in our rooms or after a practice. You do it, and that’s what matters.

Thank you for making the ordinary things, extraordinary.

Thank you for making things like going to the store or going to band practice so much fun! You know how to make something like eating dinner into something more like a comedy show. Thank you for making me laugh even when we’re just sitting in the lounge doing work or at least trying to do work. Donating blood was never such a fun thing until I met all of you.

Thank you for relaxing with me.

Thank you for the nights when you watch movies with me to relax. I think this is the one I appreciate most. You realize when we all just need a break to watch Newsies, High School Musical, Grease, or Beauty and the Beast. Those relaxing nights just laughing and singing are what I’ll remember most from college, not the tests. Thank you for the memories we’ve shared and those yet to come.

Thank you for giving me that extra push I need.

Although I may never want to agree to this one, I always will appreciate it. Even when I want to just hangout, you always understand when I need to study more. Without your support, my success wouldn’t be possible. A group of people to lean on and care about is absolutely necessary for success. You all are that to me.

Thank you for being so kind and accepting me.

You accepting me even with my bit of a weird side is much appreciated. When you compliment me and send nice messages, it’s something that really helps me get through a busy day. Thank you for encouraging me on the worst of my days. It truly means a lot.

Lastly, Thank You for Being YOU!

We may not have been friends very long yet, but I know that this friendship is one I hope to have for many years.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
