Open Letter to my Younger Cousin

"A cousin is a little bit of childhood that can never be lost."

Dear Cousin,

Ever since I was four years old and I held you as a baby, you and I have been inseparable. I can remember playing dolls with you in your room, dancing to songs from Camp Rock, and trying to teach you how to play piano. We've been on vacations to Disney and Hilton Head together, and we've made memories that I will never forget. Over the years, we both have become so close. We grew up together and watched each other change. As your older cousin, I've had the opportunity to see you grow into the person you are today.

I want to thank you for always being there for me. Having a cousin like you is truly a gift because you're not only my cousin, but one of my best friends. You're one of the nicest people that I know and I am so happy that we are so close. I want nothing but the best for you, because you deserve it. I want you to know how loved you are and how much you matter to me.

I know that high school isn't easy. I know that you are probably overwhelmed with assignments, social events, and thinking about the future. I know that some days you're up all night doing homework and I know that sometimes it seems like it will never get easier. You probably wonder if everything is worth it. I want to let you know that it will be worth it. Your hard work will pay off and you will go far.

I also want to let you know that you are worthy of a good life. Be prepared for hard days and remember that life isn't easy. Some days you might feel like the world is falling apart, and that it will never get better. But I want you to remember that you are going to be okay. No matter what happens in life, remember that everything happens for a reason and you should never give up hope. As someone who has made it through hard times, I want to let you know now that if you ever experience something difficult (which nearly everyone does), you will make it through. Our struggles in life are what ultimately make us stronger. As your older cousin who cares about you and loves you, I want you to know that life isn't easy, but it really is good. As long as you love life, life will love you back.

I love you so much and I will always be here for you.

Your cousin,

Clare <3

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
