Dear professors,
I'm happy you take your job so seriously. I really am. My education literally depends on your dedication...however, there are some things you do that are just unnecessary. While I am speaking solely from my own personal experience, I'm sure there are many other college students who agree with me. So let's get started, shall we?
First of all...textbooks. Why? What makes you think we have $100 laying around to spend on a textbook for each class that we will most likely use only once and end up trying to sell it back for 5 cents? When a professor claims the textbook required for their course is "affordable," they are using the word in the same way Mayor De Blasio meant when he mentioned affordable housing in his plans for New York City that promised to displace thousands of people.
And if that isn't clear enough for you stated plain and simple, WE CAN'T AFFORD IT. Luckily I have avoided buying textbooks for the majority of my college career and opted for the more economic option by making copies from the reserved library textbooks. Not all of us got that kinda time on our hands.
Next, what's up with these boring lectures? Do you not see we are struggling to stay awake?! Don't you care at all if we are literally being bored to death? I realize it's anthropology or whatever, but there has got to be a more creative and engaging way to teach any subject so it can be both enjoyable and productive. That guy in the back of the class has every right to snore loudly! He is just expressing what we all are feeling.
The last, but certainly not least, point I'd like to discuss with you is homework. A lil' less, please. I'll even let you in on a little secret. College students are more receptive to learning when they are on-campus. When I'm there in school, I am there to learn. When I get home I don't want to see, hear, or even talk about school. Any homework assignments I get are gonna be rushed and completed five minutes before class. And this is coming from a straight-A student. I'm not saying don't give any homework, but don't send us home with the majority of the lesson and expect us to do your job for you. Save it for the classroom.
We might be college students, but we are also adults with lives, jobs, some of us even have children. Our college experience could be so much more enjoyable and overall better if our professors would simply be more considerate and understanding of our individual situations.
