Freshman year of college comes with its many ups and downs. Once again, you are at the bottom of the food chain as a lower class trying to find your way around a new place. The difference between transitioning from high school to college and from middle school to high school is the friends you’ve had for years might not have followed you to this next level. Whether you stayed in state for college or opened your wings to a new adventure away from home, going to college is a new beginning.

However, you are not alone. The whole rest of your freshman class is feeling all the same excitement and worries that you might be feeling too. In fact, the best people to lean on for support through freshman year are the people you live with. The roommates you have freshman year could end up being your best friends or your worst enemies, depending on how the living situation goes. Either way, it is a learning experience that will guide you through the rest of your college years.

To my freshman year roommates:

Meeting new people has never been my forte, but I couldn’t have asked for any better people to meet my first year of college. We started off as strangers to each other, until the relationship turned from six girls living with each other to a family of sisters. Like any sisters, we had our disagreements and the tension in the room could suffocate a person at times, but a solution was always found in the end. You girls were like my family away from home. Walking to class, lunch and dinners together helped me settle into the college life a lot easier than I could have imagined.

One of the many worries that students have going off to college is making new friends. I came to school not knowing a single soul because I was the only one from my high school. After meeting all of you, that worry was erased from the top of my list making room for the next aspect of college to worry about. I never had to worry who I would walk to class with or who I would go to dinner with because we were a family that walked together and ate together.

Our family of six had our own little world of fun times and endless laughter. Whether it was crazy Friday nights out on the town or a lazy Saturday nights in with sweatpants and a chick flick, the memories always make me smile. The experiences we had together are ones I will never forget and would not trade for any others. I wasn’t sure what to expect from my freshman year at college. Growing up, you hear different stories, some good and some bad. I can officially say my freshman year experience with my roommates would fall under the good category, not the bad.

Throughout our freshman year, we all had each other’s backs. Whether it was saving each other from thirsty guys, tough professors or a nasty cold, we all stepped up for one another doing whatever was needed. We might not have as many classes together anymore, and the only times we see each other might be walking down the street for class or on a night out. However, I will always consider all of you close friends that I have a connection with. Making it through freshman year together gave us a certain bond that will connect us even when we are a part.

I love you girls like you are a part of my family, and I always will.

Sincerely,

Your sister from another mister

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
