An Open Letter To My Favorite Professor

Dear Professor,

I had no idea what I was getting myself into when I took your class. Granted, I did check Rate my Professor beforehand, but that did not prepare me for the amount of work I was getting myself into, or how thankful I would be for taking the class. Thank your for being that one class I loved going to and that one professor who helped me through it all.

Thank you for pushing me.

This class was a lot of work, simple as that. It included a ton of reading, including things that I had to read over five times to understand. Hell, sometimes I didn’t understand it even after that. There was no option just to wing things. I was forced to analyze and understand rather than just memorize. It pushed me to think critically, something that a lot of courses don’t make students do. So thank you for showing me that by pushing forward, I can accomplish a lot.

Thank you for extensively explaining things to me.

I apologize for sending you countless emails, sometimes multiple in the same night five minutes apart from each other. Thank you for responding to those emails even if it was late at night or a weekend. Don’t worry, I totally saw that it said “sent from IPhone.” Thanks for dealing with me in your office hours practically both times every week. Whether it was a five minute explanation or a 30 minute one, that helped me more than you know.

Thank you for being real with me.

Whether this was about your class or me trying to figure out my life plan, you were blunt and honest. You didn’t sugar coat anything, which is the most I could have asked from you. I overanalyze and overthink, but you would always ground my thoughts. These seemingly minor things were major to me.

Thank you for the support.

Last, but not least, thank you for being there when I thought my life was going awry. The amount of times I came into your office hours just to figure out where I was going in life was excessive. Thanks for not kicking me out of your office and acting like it was no big deal that I was probably there more than any other student. You helped me make some big decisions, and I know in the future you will probably help me make some even larger decisions.

This semester may be over, but I am forever grateful. And don’t worry, I’ll be in one of your classes next semester, too. Don’t miss me too much over break!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
