An Open Letter To My Mom

This one is for you, beautiful.

An Open Letter To My Mom
Elizabeth Ashley Hyatt

As I have gotten older over the years, I have realized how important you are in my life.

Nowadays I am here at school, doing school work non-stop, studying, or hanging out with friends. In college, I have been so overwhelmed. I always call you during class changes or even just to hear your voice almost every day because it always makes me feel better talking to you.

You always know how to make me calm down and how to cheer me up. Ever since I was little, you have been my hero and someone I have always looked up to. I know life has and still is hard for you and us as a family, and I know I don’t always do much to make it easier, but you have sacrificed so much in your life just to raise me and make me the person I am today. That means more to me than I’ll ever be able to express in words. So I just want to thank you.

I want to thank you for always being here for me no matter what. I come to you with some crazy things sometimes, and you are always there for me, no matter how crazy it is. I am really lucky to have someone like you. I could call you crying about how hard school is and how stressed I am all the time and you will listen to me each time I call. You always reassure me that I can do it, or you are able to tell me how to fix my situation, which I need. I always have a shoulder to cry on and a shoulder to laugh on. Thank you for the laughter, the smiles, the lessons, and for reminding me that I’ll always have somebody who loves me for who I am, flaws and all.

I know it is not all roses with our relationship, but I really don’t know what I would do without you. I just want to let you know how much I love you. You are the strongest person I know and I know you would do anything to see me or my brother happy. I just love that about you. You have such a full heart and you care so deeply about everyone around you. You work so hard to give us everything we could ever want. You can make people smile without even trying. You are motivated and you work hard. You may be stressed out a lot of the time, but no one would ever know it because you don’t show it.

You have made me into the person I am today. Thank you for that. Without you, I would be lost. Thank you for working hard and thank you for always being there for me, no matter what, while I am trying to figure out this crazy thing called life. Most importantly, thank you for loving me unconditionally and being my best friend.

I confide in you all the time and tell you everything happening in my life and you have no judgment. You are always there to listen and to give advice. You are truly the only person I can trust with everything and the only person I know that will always love me, no matter what.

Yes, I may have friends here and there, but not one of them could replace you, Momma. You are my heart. I am sorry we always fuss. I am sorry that I always put you through so much. I am sorry for letting you down sometimes. I have been trying to do better, but still, I am sorry for it all. You are the most important person in my life. If I lost you, I would lose a piece of myself. You are my best friend and I am so lucky that God chose me to be your daughter.

I love you so much, Momma. Thank you for being you.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
