Bernie, let’s be honest, you pretty much came out of nowhere. Now, especially being a college student, you seem to be everywhere! You gained huge traction with the younger voting crowd with your free college plans and democratic socialist views.
Your campaign overcame obstacles at every turn- unfair mainstream media practices, advertising discrimination, obsessions and preconceptions from older generations about the word “socialist”, and attempts to sabotage and discredit you on both a professional and a personal level. You argued with people more stubborn and narrow minded than a wall and managed to keep your cool. You, unlike that orange cow on the other side, managed to treat everyone with respect this entire campaign. For all of these things, I must say I have the utmost respect for you.
Unfortunately, I am not quite “Feeling the Bern” as the saying goes. I personally think some of your goals are much too grand to be feasible at this point and I worry that with you in office, the resistance from the Republican Party would block your actions at every turn simply because of who you are. The nomination is looming closer and if you win it, I have no issue throwing my support to you, but if you don’t, I have a favor to ask…
If you fail to win the nomination, please please please one hundred times please, endorse Hillary Clinton.
I know I just shocked or disgusted some people with that request, but hear me out!
I cannot tell you how many times I have heard or read people say “If Bernie doesn’t make it, I’m voting for Trump” or “Either Bernie or anyone but Hillary”. While I can understand the hesitation some people have when it comes to Hillary becoming president, you know better than anyone that the kind of hate, ignorance, and bigotry that Trump spews out is the worst possible outcome for our country. Another common one is “Even if Bernie is not on the ballot, just write him in and he could still win!” The way the political process and Electoral College work would make a win that way nearly impossible without total and complete support.
As of right now, and the projections that political experts have released the last few weeks, show that Donald Trump has a good chance of becoming president. The only thing standing in his way right now is the Democratic Party. A divided party, one where people default to the new age Hitler or try to swing a “write in win”, will not be enough.
If Hillary wins the nomination over you, you have every right to be angry, jealous, and frustrated. What I am asking you to do, is not be petty, to put the needs of the country, the hope for the future, above your personal feelings about the election system. If you come out and endorse Hillary Clinton post nomination, you will be enough to convince the majority of wishy-washy Democrats to at the very least unite and prevent the horrible idea that is Trump becoming president.
