Dear Time,
People call you by names like seconds, minutes, days, months and years. They try to keep you in clocks and watches. They try to pass you, waste you and even kill you, but right now all I want to do is promise you.
I promise to value everything you leave behind, whether good or bad. As you part with us, you leave with a trace of memories. Some of these we try to scrub out of our mind like a stain on a carpet. Others we play on repeat like we would with a hit single. Whether good or bad, these memories are significant enough to stick around for years and maybe even a life time. They affect the things we think, the words we speak and our actions day in and day out. They are the bricks that lay the foundation of who we are. I will always remember their importance.
I promise to stop taking you for granted. You are the only thing we are constantly running out of, but always think we have more of. I wish I would have realized how dangerous of an illusion this is at an earlier time in my life. But, dwelling on the past is a waste and I just promised not to take you for granted. So, from here on out I will put ideas in to action, feeling in to words and stop assuming you will always have more to give.
I promise not to wish you away. I’ve always rushed you along with exclamations of “I can’t wait,” and “Is this almost over?” My grandfather told my father and my father told me “Don’t wish your life away.” Now, as another chapter of my life is about to come to an end I realize how crucial that advice really is. You see, as you speed up, you run out. I’m sorry for always trying to get rid of you.
The truth is, one day we will have more memories than time, we will realize what we had because it will be gone and we will wish for the minutes we wished away to come back. You enter our lives through the rising and setting sun, the beating of our hearts and the change of the seasons. You can fly, you can heal, you can even drag on, but you will never be able to stop. Which means it’s time for us to start.
Sincerely,
Your Everyday Average Person
