An Open Letter To The Lost Millennials

Hey! We are not total screw ups.

Hey, guys.

You are probably tired of hearing the term "millennial". Quick question: Do you even know what that word means? Being a millennial means that you were born between the 1980s and the early 2000s. The rest of the meaning is a little hazy. If you go to Wikipedia, the Millennial Page will have statements like "most researchers" or "a certain percentage of". Basically, we have no clue about what we are. Those in front of us look down at us as if we are disappointments. And those after us, look up to us as if we are gods and goddesses. No pressure, right? We still do not know who we are. Let me give you some help, okay?

Ten characteristics define us: We are civic-oriented, compassionate, confident, diverse, large, politically engaged, progressive, team oriented, technologically adept, well educated. However, these characteristics do not define everybody. So we still have an identity crisis. So what do we do?

We are challenged to fix the world of the past for the people of the future. The past generations ruined our society, and now we have to fix it. We are the ones who they call the police on. For any reason, really. We are the kids who are deemed lazy. We are the ones who just love marijuana and sex. We are the ones who get pregnant at an early age. Get it? We are the ones who are screwed and damned this nation. Apparently.

Don't be discouraged. Because we are the ones who fail while laughing. We are the ones who see the mistakes of the predecessors. We are the ones who are going to fix those mistakes. Of course, we are going to make our own messes, but we are the ones who take ownership. We are the ones who create trends and apps and revolutionize social media with a selfie. We are the young bosses and the hardworking students. We changed the meaning of "The American Dream". We are the ones the governments fear. Sorry, but we are the ones that our parents warned about.

So, if you feel horrible and sick of what you have been born into, just remember that Hiroshima and the Iraq War were not our fault. And just remember that we are changing the world for the ones after us. Now go be revolutionary.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
