An Open Letter To The Girl Going Out For Recruitment
Jennifer Connell

Dear girl who is going out for recruitment,

Recruitment week is right around the corner and trust me, you will be nervous, anxious, and excited at the same time. It will probably be one of the best feelings you will ever have. The whole week you will want to skip to Friday, but take the moment in and have fun! Recruitment week is a week to meet new people, learn information about amazing organizations, and become friends with people who you will have in your life forever.

If I could give you one piece of advice that would be worth taking, it would be to go in with an open mind. Don’t completely forget about the open socials you have attended, but be open to getting to know other organizations and falling in love with them. One day you might be sharing the same values as the women in the room you are going into and to me, that alone is such an amazing feeling.

Be yourself! To go into recruitment and act like someone you are not, would be a bad decision. Imagine joining a sorority that you will be in for the rest of your life and you can’t be yourself. Outrageous right? Yeah, don’t do that.

Be honest with yourself. You will be living by these values for the rest of your life.

Be ready to stay up long hours of the night with stress and anxiety, well at least I did. “What if they don’t like me back?” was a thought that ran through my mind until I received my bid Friday morning. I kept my roommate up for hours every night asking her to tell me what they would see in me. Now that I am finally apart of Greek life, I can say that even if I wasn’t to get a bid, it wouldn’t be for them not “liking” me, but some people are not meant for Greek life yet. Emphasis on the yet! You will go into recruitment with friends and might even lose some after, but you might gain sisters that will have your back no matter what. I did, and I found myself happier than ever.

You will soon realize that the time you once had, is pretty much gone. Your life will soon be consumed by sisters and socials. Not really, you will have some free time… like to sleep.

In all seriousness, you will look back and wish you could run to your sisters again. You will be so thankful to be a part of an amazing organization that is, indeed, mutual. Do not take recruitment week for granted because you will one day look back and wish you could do it all over again.

Joke will be on you though, because recruitment week happens every semester and you will be the one welcoming new sisters into your organization and your arms.

Go Greek, it will be the best decision you will ever make.

Love,

A proud member of Greek Life

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
