An Open Letter to the College I Call Home
Augustana University

Everyone's college experiences differ, in one form or another. Some people might've never had a college experience at all. Personally, my college experience has been phenomenal and I truly consider it to be my home. While not all share my passion for my university, I know for a fact that there are many that do. So without further adieu, an Open Letter to the University I Call Home.

Dear University,

I'll admit, before my decision to attend, I was quite skeptical. I was young and didn't want to think about anything beyond high school. I was convinced that the four years I'd just experienced were the best of my life. I was worried that the wonder of high school would damper my college experience. I didn't know what was outside of my little, all too familiar world, and I wasn't ready to find out. I wasn't sold on the idea of going to college.

I couldn't have been any more incorrect.

I went on another visit, just to reconsider my options, and I fell in love. From that moment on, I knew this was where I needed to be. On the outside, this blessed institution only appears to be another university, like the myriad of others scattered across the country. Inside though, that's where everything truly comes into play. I've learned so much during my time here, good and bad, and I'm grateful for it all. Each lesson I've learned has helped me grow as a person. Each memory I've made is one that I'll always cherish. All the friendships that I've created are ones that've helped me become who I am today.

The changes I've gone through have been made for the bettering of all - the bettering of my physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing, the bettering of my relationships, and the bettering of my abilities. I wouldn't be the adult I am today if it weren't for this incredible place.

This university has become more than just that to me. This university has become my home. It's my place of comfort and security. It's where I want to be at the end of a long day, and it's where I want to start every morning. This is where the friends who've become my family are. Every aspect of my college experience has led up to it becoming more like home every day.

So thank you, beautiful university, for being how you've been for so long. Thank you for all the lessons, friendships, and memories that have been created in your hallowed halls. I'm beyond blessed to be here, and I can guarantee that I don't regret the decision I made for a moment.

Thank you for everything.

Sincerely,

A student in love with college.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
