When people ask me how you are, I respond with, "I'm wondering the same thing." When I tell people that we no longer speak to each other they are shocked, but not as shocked as I am.
We met in middle school and after that our friendship was undeniable. You were either at my house or vice versa. Not one day passed where we did not see each other or hangout after school. Then the summer before high school came and it just felt different. We were so scared that we would not see each other since we did not have any of the same classes or lunch. We knew better though, we still saw each other just as much as we did in middle school. It was great!
You were always there for me when no one else was. I told you so much, you could probably write a book about it. Now that is just distant memories. We started drifting apart. We were in different extracurricular activities. We were too busy for each other. The activities we were involved in took so much time that we did not have much time for anything but school work. I was involved with color guard/winter guard and you were involved with yearbook. I was so happy for you, seeing you do something that you love. I always supported you. However, when I stepped on that field, I looked up at the crowd and I did not see my best friend's face. I still performed the heck out of that show and I was very proud of myself.
At that point I knew it was not going to be the same. I rarely saw you. We started hanging out with different people. Getting close to completely different people. Eventually we stopped talking altogether. When we did see each other, it just felt different. Our conversations were forced. What happened to when we could have a whole conversation in the span of two minutes walking to our classes?
All friends have arguments. We were different though. If we fought we could not be mad at each other for longer than an hour. That is what I loved about our friendship, no matter what we would always be there for each other. I have denied the things people have told me that you have said. Hurtful things. I knew you, you were not that kind of person.
Now that it has been almost two years since we have talked. We are both older and moved on with our lives without each other. I honestly thought you would still be in my life today but you are not and that is okay. You found where you belong and I am still trying to find that place. It hurts to think about all the fun times we have together but that does not mean it does not bring a smile to my face. I hope all is well with you and when someone asks how you are, I will respond with, "That is someone I used to know."
