Roommates can be awful, especially random ones. We have all heard the horror stories: rude, unhygienic or just down right scary. The first year of college is most people's first roommate experience, and therefore, completely nerve wracking. Many first year roommates do not stay in touch and usually definitely do not want to room together again. But, there are a few lucky ones who find not only the perfect roommate but also a best friend.
So, this is to my roomie and best friend (you know who you are):
First of all, thank you for always having my back. I cannot believe we met by chance and now you are one of the biggest parts of my life. Honestly, I can't imagine my life before you were in it because it feels like we have known each other for years. But, I guess that is what happens when we are constantly around each other. Our beds are literally about six feet from each other, but I am so thankful we are more than just roommates who see each other when we go to bed. I am so thankful you are also one of my best friends at college.
You are one of those people who I can be myself around and it won't matter. I don't need makeup and I can opt for sweatpants without worrying about you judging me. When we go out to eat (CookOut anyone?) I know you won't judge me if I get a tray and a milkshake and maybe another side of hushpuppies... multiple times a week. I know I can listen to whatever music I want and I can break out in my completely awesome and totally not embarrassing dance moves and you will just join along. I also know I can talk to you about literally anything and ask advice, and you will be honest with me and no matter happens I know you have my back. And I hope you know I always have yours.
The only bad part of being best friends and roommates is when break finally comes. We're both from completely different parts of the country, and not only have I gotten used to having you around, but life is just more fun when you're around. I'm truly not sure how I am going to last an entire summer without you.
One question I have gotten used to hearing is, "Do you like your roommate?" And, usually, the person asking is not prepared for the long discussion that ensues about how much I love and appreciate my roommate. So, dear roomie and bestie, thank you for not caring about how messy I am, thank you for laughing at my jokes, thank you for always being shotgun and DJ when we go get food, thank you for having the same messed up sleeping pattern as me, and thank you for always making jokes with me. Can't wait to live with you next year.
Sincerely,
Your roommate with an unhealthy obsession with CookOut who will always be there for you
