Dearest America,
We knew that this day would come. The guard has changed, and we have a new president. He may not be the president that we were expecting to occupy the Oval Office, but now he’s there nonetheless.
Ever since the results came in, we have all been quite restless. Thousands of us have marched in protests, vented our opinions through social media, and some have even started a petition to impeach the new president. Fearful questions have been asked, and uncertain answers have been given. It’s certainly been quite the ride over this past year.
But amidst all this turmoil and insecurity over what’s in store for the future of our dear country, I would like to remind you that there is still hope. Hope for better things to come, hope that we can still become stronger as a people and a nation. It may be easy to overlook, and it may be small, but it’s there.
The United States was founded on the principle that any man or woman, no matter their color or creed, could come and live in freedom and without fear of persecution. That dream is not dead. And so long as liberty thrives, it never will be. How do I know this? Simple; it’s in our history.
We fought back against the British in the Revolutionary War, putting the United States on the map. We helped defeat the Axis powers in World War II, letting liberty live. But is that to say that we are without blemish? Certainly not, for we have made our fair share of mistakes and have fought with each other more than once. But we’ve always learned from both our victories and defeats and have come back stronger every time. And there’s no reason it can’t happen again.
We as the American people are strong, but that strength comes from our unity. We all share the same dream for justice and freedom, not just for our own people but for all people. Now, in the face of anger and hatred, we need to stand together more than ever before with humanity and love in our hearts. Not as Republicans, Democrats, Independents, or what have you, but as Americans. As the people of this world.
More than fear we need hope. More than greed we need kindness. And more than seeing each other as strangers, we need to extend our hands and embrace each other as friends, brothers, sisters, and fellow countrymen. For it is us, the people of the United States of America, who hold the power to change the world. So let us use that power to make the world a better place, a beautiful place, for each other and all people of all nations.
In the words of the Reverend Martin Luther King Jr., “Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that.” Darkness is not the solution, darkness is not the way. Light will bring us together, and we are strong when we stand together. So let us come together and stand strong, united, not as Democrats or Republicans, but as Americans. As the people of this world.
