An Open Letter To My New Sisters

We have some things to say to our newbies

Dear New Sisters,

You have no idea how excited we all are to welcome you into our sisterhood! Getting new members is our favorite time of year...and it honestly does feel like Christmas. Recruitment week is long and hard, for us and most definitely for all of you as well. And on our side of things, the thought that gets us through the hours of practicing, cheering, and wearing spanx, is that we're doing it all to find the perfect young ladies to welcome into our home. And guess what? We found you! So now that we have you, precious new sisters, here are some things we'd like to say.

You are nervous...and it's okay. Starting anything new is a little scary, and joining a sorority is certainly not an exception. We know it can be intimidating to have 200 people Facebook friend you in one night. It can be overwhelming to feel like you have a million names to learn and no time to learn them. We know. And we're nervous about getting to know you, too. But we'll get there, and before you know it, you'll feel like you're right at home in no time. We promise.

You are brilliant. Founders, installation dates, Greek letters, bylaws, dues, what the heck is happening, help me. Maybe that's exactly how you feel when learning all you need to know when you are joining a sorority. It's so much information you feel like your head is spinning. But remember one thing: hundreds of women have done it before you. If we can do it, you absolutely can do it, too. No matter how much information there seems to be, or how quickly it might be thrown at you, you are smart and capable and our sister. We are here to support you and to help you. Don't be scared, and don't give up. You're simply too smart for such a thing.

We see something in you. Maybe you're an incredible dancer and we recognize your talent, discipline, and dedication. Maybe you're a rising engineering major and we recognize your ambition, attention to detail, and determination. Maybe...no definitely, we recognize your beauty, your character, and your perfect fit in our chapter. Everyone has hard days...and sometimes for new members, those hard days include questioning why you're here. You are here because we love you, we want you as our sister, and we want to be your family. Each and every one of you absolutely deserves that.

You have earned this. We mean what we say when we tell you it's a privilege to wear our letters. It's not something every woman gets to do, not something every woman gets to experience. You have earned it. You stood outside houses in the freezing rain and in the smoldering heat. You kept up conversations with a dozen strangers a day. You opened yourself up to a new and scary experience...and this is your well-deserved award. You got through it. You did it. You found your home. So don't forget to go easy on yourself, to have fun with your new sisters, and to remember that we all say something special in you.

We love you. That one's pretty self-explanatory. But we'll say it all the time. Because we mean it. And it's the truth.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
