An Open Letter to Lorde
Redeye Chicago

Dear Lorde,

If you actually ever see this, I'd like to just state for the record that I am a huge fan of yours, and there are so many reasons why- I can't even fully explain. I'd at least like to try and thank you, though, with some of the reasons I, and many others, think you're awesome.

Thank you for all of the on point social commentary in the lyrics of your incredibly catchy songs. It’s nice to know that people at the top still see what we see down here at the bottom.

Thank you for having such a well-rounded album. I don’t think we note this enough, I have never been so happy to spend the ~$15 to buy your album- there wasn't a single song I constantly need to skip because it’s just so much worse than the rest of the album.

Thank you for being willing to be different. Although I’m sure you were highly criticized at times for your different look, I am still a huge fan at the end of the day; as are many people, seeing as you’re still a top 40 artist. It’s fun to remember that you got there mostly by mocking other top 40 artists for letting fame get to them.

Thank you for being good live and not just on the radio. Too often artists are so autotuned that seeing them live is no longer worth it. But I can genuinely say that I have never been happier to stand in a field surrounded by thousands of other individuals packed close to me to get to see you live (Lollapalooza).

Thank you for showing us all that you don’t have to wait to be successful. You released Royals at age 16 and gave every high school girl something to aspire to. You were a lot of our #goals for the next few months. But instead of being a one hit wonder, you continued to work and released Pure Heroine. And now, you’re 18 and an international star. You showed us that you don’t have to be old to succeed at life.

Thank you for identifying as a feminist and for showing us how powerful women can be. Many times people are scared to identify as one because of all the negative associations that come with it. But you keep doing you, no matter what anyone says.

Thank you for not giving a f*ck. To put it bluntly, you speak out against what you dislike in this world, especially in relation to fame. You have no fear in criticizing your contemporaries and for that I applaud you. Even when you have critics constantly watching you and talking about you, you still manage to stay true to yourself.

Thank you for giving us all a celebrity role model to look up to. You definitely are one of my role models and I know countless girls across the country feel the same way. You were willing to be different when nobody else was, you showed us to be willing to be different if it means being ourselves. A quote that accurately describes how most of us feel is “I hope I was a Lorde in a sea of Taylor Swift’s” –Biz Ann. And truly, I really hope I was, and am.

Sincerely,

A Girl Who You Know Is On Your Team

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
