Dear Hollywood, you've been at the front of groundbreaking technology and social justice for years, enticing people to follow your lead. But it's time to move on from some of the norms that you've fallen into.
For example, are you aware that most of the actors and actresses that you've been putting on the giant silver screen are primarily white? Not that there aren't any people of color, there's just a huge imbalance of these talented people. For example, there have been rumors that while some of these people do have their own followings, you want to use white actors and actresses in roles that should be filled by that ethnic group. You can't use CGI to make them appear "more Asian" if they aren't Asian. That's disgusting and wrong.
Are you also aware that you can have a character that follows under the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender label without killing them off? People would actually pay real money to go see a movie where that character makes it through the whole film without being killed off in some fashion. This applies to television shows too. Representation for all of these minority groups is important whether you realize it or not.
Why do you have adults play the roles of girls and boys? Shouldn't those roles be played by people in those age groups? That distorts how the little girls and boys are going to see themselves.
People follow your lead. The younger generations see what you put out and want to do what they see in the movies or at home on the television. It helps them understand the world that is around them. Do we really want people to think that it's okay to be mean and forget about people of color when they're literally all around us? Do we want them to see boys and men as superior simply because there are few strong female superheroes to look up to? Do we want them to assume that just because they fall under the LGBT umbrella, they're going to fall victim to something terrible because all of those characters always meet an unfortunate end?
It's your call, Hollywood. Just know that I'm sick of the crap that you've been pulling.
