An Open Letter To High Schools Regarding Senior Skip Day

Dear High School Teachers and Administration,

We need to talk. As a senior in high school working on final projects and getting ready to study for final exams I know I, and my fellow classmates from my own school and just about every other school, could use a break from it all. This is where senior skip day comes into play. One day for the senior class to ditch school for a day to let ourselves wined down from the end of the school year stresses and worries.

While I do understand that we have weekends to do these things, most weekends are full doing of pre-made plans, whether these be family related or even work related, and honestly homework and studying for tests and quizzes await us as soon as we leave school on Friday into our two day break from school’s grasp. So, all we want is one carefree day away from school and work where we can take a moment just for ourselves, but we all know that that isn’t what you want for us.

As soon as the day after a senior class plans their day of freedom someone always spills the beans and you know exactly when our event shall take place. From that point until the day of our planned event you decide to pester the entire school with how you don’t condone the skipping of school and all the things you plan on taking away from us if we decide to skip on that one specific day of the year. Even after the event is over you again will start you talks on how how bad skipping is and how we shouldn’t have done what we did.

Look, I understand you can’t just let a whole grade of students skip a day of school, especially if you’re aware of it, but the excessive nagging seems unnecessary. For one, people skip on a regular basis, more so in their senior year than any other, so what is one more day really? Secondly, senior skip day happens everywhere, not just in one place, so don’t try to act like it’s only your specific school that is goes on.

All we ask is that you give us one day as a class to skip and have some fun. All that has to be done is when you inevitably find out when senior skip day will be, give us a warning to not skip and then drop it. You told us not to do it, you successfully succeeded in trying to keep us in school, now let us have our fun. Threatening us with tests and revoking privileges isn’t going to make us stay in school. If anything it will just fuel the flame and make us want to skip even more.

While I can’t promise you that we won’t skip anymore days after that as individuals, I can say that that by letting us have our one day it will help us to keep our sanity through the rest of the school year making us do a lot better on all the work you want us to do good on. One day is all we ask for as a class. Can’t we have just one day?

Sincerely,

Just Another High School Senior

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
