An Open Letter To My High School Senior Self

You have so much ahead of you still.

An Open Letter To My High School Senior Self

Dear Senior Self,

It’s your future self here with some valuable advice for you. It’s your second semester of senior year. You can smell the finish line. However, this doesn’t mean you can give up just yet. Keep pushing yourself through these next few months and trust me when I tell you that it will pay off. Your friends may have caught senioritis, but don’t let them infect you. Finish this semester off by trying your absolute hardest and you will reap the benefits.

I know you don’t want to hear about grades, so let me give you some information about your personal life that I’m sure you want to know. There is still time in your high school career to make friends, and in fact, you will stay in close contact with a few people who you didn’t befriend until the last months of high school. With that being said, you are going to lose some friends too, and trust me when I say that it’s going to be okay. It’s at this time in your life when you decide what you want to do and who you really are, and sometimes, your friends will not choose the same path as you. Don’t spend time withering away at these old friendships and instead treasure those who value you and have made an effort to stay in your life. In college, you’ll meet a bunch of new people who will make you realize that those bad friends you had in high school were just bumps in the road before finding some of the most amazing people you’ll ever meet.

Enjoy the last events you’ll be able to attend in high school. Once you graduate, there are no more pep rallies, no more field trips, and no more being a part of your favorite team or club. Go to every function and make memories. Not only will these events make your final semester a blast, but they will also be the foundation for great stories to tell your new college friends about. However, I should warn you now that Senior Prom is not all it’s cracked up to be. It’s just like any other high school dance except with more drama. It doesn’t matter who your date is or even if you get voted prom queen. This is your last real event with your senior class, and you should try and enjoy it at least a little bit. Once you get past all of the petty drama, you will have a good time, and on top of that, you’ll look fabulous and feel like a princess.

I also know that you are scared out of your mind for college. Trust me when I tell you that you are going to adjust much better than you expect. You’ll adapt to living in the dorms on your own, you’ll make friends, and you’ll get good grades. College is going to be one of the best things you will experience, and it will truly be a memorable time. You will leave all of the people behind who put you down and you will completely forget about them. People may have brought you down out of jealousy, but you are surely going to prove them wrong. Just wait for the chance to go to your high school reunion and boast about all of your accomplishments to that bully who had no faith in you.

While you are sitting in your graduation ceremony, all you will be thinking about is the new life you have ahead of you. Yes, you are going to miss the times you had in high school, but you should look more forward to grabbing that diploma, chucking up the deuces, and turning the page to start the next chapter in your life. Here’s to you!

Sincerely,

Future Self

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
