An Open Letter To My Best Guy Friend

Because I'm lucky to have you

An Open Letter To My Best Guy Friend

I've had my fair share of friendships in my 20 years of life. But the friendship that I have with you is the one I value the most. I will never forget when we first met. It seems like it was just yesterday. It was our freshman year of high school, during B lunch. The majority of the freshmen were sitting in the hallway because the cafeteria was full. Of course, we were both complaining to each other about it. Some things never change.

The years went on and on and we sure did cause a lot of ruckus. I can still hear all our teachers yelling at us to be quiet or telling us to separate because all we would do in class was talk and laugh. I was the first call when you got your license and when you got your first car. You were my first call when I got my license. I even told you before I told my dad. We graduated high school together (obviously) and we even had joint graduation parties. Oddly enough, we got accepted to the same school. I guess God knew I wasn't going to be able to survive college without you.

Over the last seven years, we definitely had our ups and downs. We had our fights. Some lasted longer than others but we moved on. There was a point in our friendship where we both changed and we weren't ourselves anymore. We got through it and stuck around for each other. I've been there for you in your times of need, and you've been there for me. And I know I don't say this enough, but thank you.

Thank you for not running away. I know I can be a handful sometimes. Mom always says, "I don't know how he's put up with you after all these years."

Thank you for always making me laugh. Seriously, I have yet to find someone who is as funny as you. You're probably the only person that makes my awful/embarrassing cackle come out.

Thank you for always being my shoulder to cry on. You aren't always all that comforting, I'll admit that, but I still always go to you when I'm upset.

Thank you for always hating the boys who hurt me. You never really admitted that you hated them but I still knew because you always rolled your eyes when I mentioned them.

Thank you for always being the first person to call me on my birthday. You have beat my parent's in the past, by the way.

Thank you for spending almost every holiday with my family. Whether it's the Fourth of July or Christmas Eve, you always make a special appearance.

Thank you for always buying me dinner. Even when it's my idea to go to dinner and all you get is a dessert because you already ate, you always surprise me when you tell our server it'll be on one check.

Thank you for always being so honest with me. It doesn't matter if you're telling me that I'm being absolutely ridiculous, or that I should pick another picture to post on instagram because the one I chose isn't all that great, I still appreciate your honesty.

Thank you for never yelling at me for blowing up your phone. I don't care that I've called you six times in a row, I will call you until you answer.

But most importantly...

Thank you for being my best friend.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
