On a regular basis I am asked, what fraternity are you in? And I respond each time with Beta Upsilon Chi, it's a Christian Fraternity. Once I tell people I am in Beta Upsilon Chi or “Bucks" as we are fondly named, I get one of three reactions; either they know BYX and they love it, they don't know BYX at all, or they just don't like it because they think just because we have the word Christian in front of fraternity that we are all judgment and snobby. I hate being stereotyped as holier than thou and I know my BYX brothers feel the same way. We as Christians tend to forget that apart from the grace of God we are nothing, and that we shouldn't judge others.
Matthew chapter 7 explains judgment and every Christian should look at this passage and understand that it's not okay to judge others. I feel that a lot of times the Greek Community doesn't understand BYX and what we represent so we tend to get a negative stigma of being judgmental. Firstly I would like to apologize to any Greek member who has felt judged. Secondly I want to apologize to any Greek member who has felt an “us versus them" vibe from us. I speak for myself and my BYX brothers when I say that we seek to bridge the gap between Greek and Christian fraternities/sororities. Our goal as BYX is to establish brotherhood and unity among college men based on the common bond of Jesus Christ, while this is our internal goal our external goal is to do this through the avenue of a social fraternity which means we like to have fun. BYX illustrates the love of Christ through its parties and while we prohibit alcohol we don't see it as inherently evil, we just know how to party and have fun without it. Anyone that has ever attended a BYX Rave or Barn Dance can attest to how fun our parties are. Texas Tech BYX, Eta Chapter has a huge heart for the Greek community, and ultimately my hope and prayer is that through our actions Greek will notice our love for Christ. We are praying for the Greek community and look forward to bridging the gap between the Greek Community and Christian fraternities/sororities.
