I suppose I knew this day was coming, but my emotions are still running a bit wild. We met when I was just a confused freshman trying to get college dialed in and you were an upperclassman stepping into that oh-so-important leadership role. I wish I had just a few more days with you on campus, but I know that you are off to make an impact outside of our small campus! Here are a few lessons you taught me that I will keep in mind as I transition from being mentored to being a mentor.
Always strive to treat people as though they were your best friend.
This is one lesson I’m forever grateful you showed me. Whenever I passed you on my way to class, you sought me out. You asked me all about my day or my exam I just finished even though you were already running late. You always searched my soul for its burdens and soothed my aching heart. I want to instill that sense of belonging in everyone I meet.
Find joy in the little things.
It is so easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of exams, papers and homework. You were always the first to point out my flawed perspective. You taught me to count my blessings daily because they are so plentiful! I want to bring joy to each conversation I have. From the rustling leaves to getting my butt kicked in racquetball, thank you for teaching me to find joy in every aspect of my life.
Chase your dreams no matter where they lead you.
Thank you for making me search my own heart. Some of my greatest passions would have run dry if you hadn’t encouraged me to pursue them. It was scary to go beyond the one or two activities I’ve already mastered, but that’s where I ran into the grace of God. You showed me what it was like to dream on different levels of dreams--to take a step into the unknown with an abandoned heart.
Love like you are on borrowed time.
I truly did save the best one for last. You made me understand just how precious it is to wake up every morning. You never took anything for granted. If there was someone hurting, you loved the hurt out of them. I don’t know where you learned it, but I want to mimic your passionate love.
I am going to miss having my crazy, fun-loving, God-fearing guru on campus next year, but I can’t wait to see who you impact next! Go out there and change some more lives, and I’ll stay here and try to be like you.
