An Open Letter To My First Roommates

No matter how far away we live from each other, you'll always be in my hearts.

An Open Letter To My First Roommates
Lindsey Hannah Kidwell

Dear Roomies,

Remember the day we first moved in together? Do you remember our first impressions of each other? I'll never forget that day for the rest of my life. That day was the beginning of everything for me. The beginning of adulthood, the beginning of new memories, and the best one, the beginning of a new family.

I remember being handed the keys to the apartment and unlocking the door for the first time all the while imagining what the next 8 months would be like. I was so excited to meet you guys, but also so nervous. What if we had different tastes? What if I was too weird? What if you were too weird? What if we didn't get along?

But as soon as I saw each one of your smiling faces, all those "what if's" vanished. I knew from the start there was no way I wasn't going to not like these girls. We all bonded over something different, whether it be our music, our jobs, Netflix, and no time spent together was ever boring. Before we knew it, our shiny, brand new apartment was covered in balloons, holes in the walls, pictures, and memories from all our shenanigans.

We did everything together, from celebrating birthdays (and half-birthdays) to dinner reservations, and even grocery shopping. We stayed up until 3 and 4am watching New Girl and Lost even though we had to be for work at 7am. You made it very clear what you thought of my boyfriend, but you supported me, and when things went the way you predicted, you never said, "I told you so."

You treated me like a baby sister, and while sometimes I hated it, I appreciate it now. You protected me and showed me how to be an adult and still have fun, and I'll always have you to thank for that. Yes, we argued, fought, gossiped about each other, teased each other, complained about each other, but none of it was because we cared about each other.

To me, you were all more than just my first roommates. You were my sisters, my counselors, the Spice Girls, my best friends, and my family. No matter how far away we live from each other, you'll always be in my hearts.

With Love,

Baby Spice

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
