An Open Letter To My Best Friend

I know it's not easy to be my friend right now, but I love you for being so patient.

Dear Best Friend,

I know I don’t have to write this. I know that you know the situation, and I’m truly blessed that you want to be by my side through anything and everything. But, there was once a time when answering your text messages and making plans to hang out didn’t seem like such an overwhelming amount of work. This was before my son was born.

You were one of the first people to meet him, hold him, and welcome him into your heart and home. I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for treating my son as if he were your own; for taking him from me when he throws his millionth tantrum, instead of handing him back to me like everyone else seems to do. For sending a delivery truck with groceries when money was tight in those first few months, and all I could afford was formula. For giving me the space I needed while I worked my butt off to finish the degree I now have, because you knew I couldn’t handle one more thing. You are an essential part of my family, and of my soul.

Thank you for reminding me that I am a person all on my own, and that my identity isn’t just that of a “mom”. That I was my own person long before I took on the role of “wife” and mother. You make me remember the person I used to be before I had my son; I don’t see this person too much anymore, but I miss her dearly and mourn her loss from time to time. She’s not entirely gone, though, just hiding until my son finds a bit more freedom, resulting in me finding more of my own. You helped me push past the dark days of frustration, anger, and guilt that come as a package-deal when I entered the world of motherhood. You are the light that helps chase that dark away. You rejuvenate me and make my spirit smile.

I know one day the situation is going to do a 180, and I’ll be the one helping you through your first few years of motherhood, as you struggle to figure it all out. I will hold your baby like he is my own, just as you’ve done for me throughout these last two difficult years.

This letter is to remind you that I am still your best friend, and that you are still mine. Your texts don’t get answered as quickly, or as often as they used to, and we don’t see each other as frequently as we both would like. In a few short years, though, when my little man isn’t so little, it will be easier for me to be there for you in the ways that I know I’m failing at right now. For that, I am sorry. But I’m begging you, please hang in there with me. Those days are not too far away.

I love you so incredibly much. You are more than my best friend, you are my sister. You’ve shown me in countless ways that the love we have for each other is unconditional. You are my soul sister, and my son couldn’t be luckier to have an aunt like you.

I know I didn’t have to write this letter. I know you understand. This is just my way of giving back to you what I can’t necessarily give to you in any other way right now. Thanks for sticking by my side.

Love you always and forever,

Your soul sister

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
