An Open Letter To The Alt-Right

Your white skin doesn't make you special.

Before I begin, let me offer a word of caution. This article will feature propaganda from Neo-Nazi/Alt-Right Twitter pages. These tweets are highly offensive.

Neo-Nazis.

That’s what you are, though you attempt to persuade the media and the public that you represent the “Alt-Right,” as if that title is more palatable. You argue that you are somehow a different animal from those who killed millions, or those who wear white sheets and champion terroristic tactics. You are no different. In fact, you might be worse. Worse because somehow you did not glean any knowledge from the classes you’ve had where Hitler or the KKK were discussed. Instead, you took the absurd idea of racial purity and relished in it.

You preach hate, but demand that your ideology be respected.

I will not respect your views. The rational world will not respect your views. This is not because we are “snowflakes.” Anyone with a mind capable of thought should understand that your views of the world are obtuse.

There are many variants of those with Alt-Right/Neo-Nazi ideas. Some of you proudly claim that the Holocaust was faked. Some of you celebrate Hitler and claim that he was simply misunderstood. Some of you think “white genocide” is a real thing. Some of you think that providing food and water to the world’s hungriest children is a mistake. Most of you worship Trump. A commonality that all of you share is your baseless hatred of anyone who is unlike you in thought or appearance. You are happy to feed into any nonsensical propaganda that you think validates your claims.

What went so wrong in your education or upbringing?

At some point, someone introduced you to an ideology of hatred and you followed right along.

At some point, you forgot how to use rational thinking.

At some point, perhaps saddest of all, you forgot how to love.

You have locked yourself inside of a mental “safe-space” and it is unlikely that you will ever tear down your own walls.

You sadden me because you think that being born in America with white skin makes you superior. You are not superior. You are undereducated, narcissistic, and ignorant. The fact that so many of you call yourselves Christians is laughable.

Actually, every aspect of your ideology would be a joke if it were not for the fact that ideologies like yours ignite genocides. Of course, when I say genocide I mean the real thing, not your make-believe “white genocide.” In your mind, diversity somehow equates to genocide. I would recommend taking a class on political violence or perhaps reading something besides obvious propaganda.

I do not have any kind parting words for you. You hate people like me. I’ll leave you with this: If you think that your white skin is indicative of racial superiority, I pity you. I am so sorry that you need to feel special and victimized. Your ignorance is not on par with intelligence. Your poorly photo shopped propaganda is not equal to fact. If you want to learn about the world, you will find many compassionate people willing to help you understand. Until then, I have nothing else to say to you.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
