Only in October

A list of places to go and things to do in October for Arizona residents.

Only in October
Vicki Taufer

This is possibly my favorite month of the year. Well, December wins, but October is a very close second. There are so many things about the month that make me excited. It’s officially fall now, so you can start pulling out the scarves and boots that you pushed to the back of the closet. It's also, for all the college students, prime time football season, with games almost every weekend. Then of course, the best part: Halloween awaits at the end of the month. I love all holidays, but there is something special about Halloween. There are so many events and activities leading up to it. Especially in college, Halloween is more than just a day or the weekend; it's the entire month. I mean, who doesn’t love dressing up?

Therefore, I decided to compile a list to keep you busy this month with exciting adventures, festivals, and Halloween traditions.

1. Find an Oktoberfest celebration:

A lot of cities will have something going on to mimic the traditional German Oktoberfest. Grab some friends and some beer and spend a day enjoying Oktoberfest. Take advantage of carnival games, music, and a lot of beer. In Tempe they have one on the shore of Tempe Town Lake from October 11th through 13th. It’s free to attend, but food, drinks, and activities will cost extra.

2. The Arizona State Fair: It comes late to Arizona to avoid the heat the summer months offer. Therefore, it comes at just the perfect time.

It is open from October 11th through November 3rd. There is a free concert series, thrill rides, and of course, the best part: deep fried food. If you go on Sunday, you can pay $35 to get an unlimited ride wristband. If you get there before 2 p.m. on Saturday or Sunday, you only pay $2 for admissions.

3. Fear farm, 13th Floor, The Crypt, Jack and Jill’s Haunted Hill

Whatever it may be, a haunted house of some sorts is a definite must. Even if you are easily scared, it’s way too fun and thrilling to pass up. It even serves as a great date night. Fear Farm is located in Phoenix at 2209 N 99th Ave.

4. Escape the Room AZ

Open from 9 a.m. to 12 a.m. Saturday and 5:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. during the week, it’s an interactive game designed for small groups of about 10 people in which your team must solve clues, find hidden objects, and solve problems in order to escape the room in a limited amount of time. You have four different types of rooms to choose from. You can be trapped inside “The Apartment” or experience scary scenery inside “The Dig.” This is definitely for those mystery seekers out there. It is located at 7017 E Main St. in Scottsdale.

5. Going to a pumpkin patch is a must.

Whether it is spending the day going through corn mazes or just picking out the perfect pumpkin to carve, it’s a good way to spend a fall afternoon. There are many in the Phoenix area, one of the larger ones is Schnepf Farms in Queen Creek.

6. A night in with your roommates: You can make all of your favorite fall foods, bake cookies (my favorite are the Pillsbury sugar cookies with the pumpkin faces on them), and drink apple cider.

It’s a perfect way to spend an October day and an excuse to stay in.

7. Decorate your house:

Even if you are in an apartment or a dorm, no one can resist putting up a couple decorations to get excited about Halloween. It's as simple as swinging by the local convenience store to find decorations to add to your place.

8. Another part of October that gets me excited is designing my Halloween costumes.

Figuring out if you are going to do something classic or try to be unique (but in the end someone usually is wearing my so called “creative” costume). However, it is still enjoyable to look around stores with your friends, from Party City to goodwill to your best friend’s closet.

9. Watching your favorite Halloween movies:

I can’t go through October without watching "Halloweentown," "The Nightmare Before Christmas," and "Hocus Pocus" a couple of times. Also, it’s a must that I turn on ABC family to watch their "13 Nights of Halloween." If you aren’t about these corny but lovable movies, have a scary movie night. Netflix has a pretty unique list of thriller and horror flicks.

10. Old Tucson Studios and Bird Cage Theatre are a few of the haunted wanders Southern Arizona holds. Take a weekend trip to check out these freaky sites.

11. Visit one of the many ghost towns Arizona has to offer.

Take a day away to venture off to one of the unique ghost towns in the area. They are endearing little places with also a creepy side to them. Such as the abandoned city of Jerome and it’s haunted Grand Hotel.

12. Halloween candy for the Trick-Or-Treaters: Let's be real, we know we will eat the whole thing.

13. Dressing up and going out on Halloween: Put on your cutest (or riskiest) outfit and party all night. Celebrate the spooky, entertaining, and wild night of All Hallows Eve.

an image of taylor swift standing center stage surrounded by her backup dancers in elegant peacock esque outfits with a backdrop of clouds and a box rising above the stage the image captures the vibrant aesthetics and energy of her performance during the lover era of her eras tour

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
