In the midst of the elections, I have been having many conversations with my friends and classmates about political views. These conversations are almost always insightful. They included opinions--sometimes educated, sometimes not--about the important issues and the candidates as a whole. The conversation always ends up on Trump. Recently, someone raised an question that got me thinking:
How much would Trump actually be able to accomplish if he were elected?
The person who I was talking to gave me a simple answer. Trump wouldn't be able to get anything done because the Republicans in the House are only toting the party line during the election. They also offered up the idea that he would be impeached before anything could happen. This, the person said is why we should elect Donald Trump over Hillary Clinton; she'll have four years. He'll have less than one.
This had me fired up. There are two reasons that this logic is wrong.
1. There are Republicans that believe that Donald Trump is the wrong candidate for the Republican Party; I'm sure of it. However, the Republicans in office are going to support their Republican president. They have careers within their party to maintain and build. If they don't support the Republican nominee, it can be seen as disloyal to the party as a whole. This bigoted person is who they chose and they have to live with it.
2. Impeachment. Something actually has to happen before a president gets impeached. Not only that, but the president has to do something illegal or extremely morally wrong. Donald's ideas, while extreme, are not illegal. The morally wrong part is questionable. But, that still means that he has to enact one of his crazy ideas. Then, it has to be investigated. Finally, the Senate has to vote. This whole process can take lots of time unless the president decides to resign. As we've seen from Trump's pride, that is unlikely.
I am in no way saying that Hillary is the perfect candidate. Far from it. In fact, I think that this election is the death of the American political system. We have ruined it. The thing to think about when voting is:
What crazy idea will Donald Trump enact first?
Will these policies be put into action because Republican senators and congressmen are willing to support the party over their opinion?
Do you want to live in a country where it is okay for our president to joke about groping women?
Do you want to live in a country where a president can change position multiple times on issue within a matter of a couple hours?
Think about all these things and what the world will look like after this telanovella-esque presidential election.
