Sometimes it’s hard to realize just how many people there are in the world working together even when they hardly know each other. Sometimes it’s even hard to realize how many people there are sitting behind their computer and phone screens every day, dedicating hours of their day to the things they enjoy. There are even people out there who judge those fangirls who spend countless hours on the Internet blogging, tweeting and sharing their ideas and artwork within their fandom.
For millions of teenagers around the world, they find a home with other fans of One Direction. The community and fandom that has formed for and around One Direction have come to be known as the Directioners.
Directioners have always been crazy supportive of One Direction and their music. From the release of their first studio album "Up All Night" in 2011 the band sold over 176,000 copies in the first week (Billboard Magazine). So naturally as One Direction began growing as a group and gaining more and more fans after every album, it was only time before the fans tried to do something of the members of the band.
This drive to do something for the band led fans to recently organize Project Home. The official Tumblr page for the project defines the purpose of this project is to promote the song "Home," saying “the song deserves way more attention than it’s gotten."
"Home" was included on the EP for the single "Perfect," which was released in late 2015. When the EP was released many fans identified with the song for various reasons. Those with hard family lives, long-distance relationships, and even LGBTQIA+ youth could see themselves in the song when listening to it as the song is very personal.
Many fans also found the need to create a fan project to promote the song themselves due to One Direction's current hiatus. As the band’s management has also slowed the promotion ideas rolling out for the band, many fans want to keep the band in the eye of the general listening public. Fans want to show those who aren’t massive One Direction fans that the band is still going strong and has amazing music.
For the fans promoting the song, the goal is for it to gain air time on popular radio stations all around the world as well as have the song appear on the charts. As songs gain air time and are streamed and bought in digital formats, such as through iTunes, it helps the song rise on the charts and then gain more play on the radio stations.
This isn’t the first time One Direction fans have assembled a project to promote a song. In the spring of 2015 fans created Project No Control, a song off the band’s fourth studio album. Fans decided that this song deserved more attention from others and to be placed on the set list for the band’s summer 2015 worldwide On The Road Again tour.
The project became widely successful. It was recognized by countless radio stations around the world who began playing the song. "No Control" even charted at No. 1 on Billboard Magazine’s Billboard and Twitter’s Top Tracks (Billboard Magazine).
This caused Louis Tomlinson (one of the four members of One Direction) to notice the project. The song was added to the set list for the remainder of the tour and Louis thanked the fans for all their hard work at almost every show.
So to all those who devalue fangirls and fanboys for wasting their time on the Internet, just know that thousands of teenagers can team up across the world and create a massive marketing campaign. For fandoms where there are thousands upon thousands of fans, it can be hard to create something so organized by a small group of fans and turn it into a massive and successful promotion campaign.
